2024 - I Am Maximus

a12a4e2889c4-grand-national.webp

In October 2023 sweeping changes to the Grand National were announced. Despite there being extensive changes to the fences in 2013 which had resulted in six Nationals in a row where all horses had returned to their stables after the race, further change was felt necessary after the chaotic and tense scenes before the 2023 race. Personally I felt this was a knee-jerk reaction to what was hopefully a one-off disruption (Animal RIsing had announced that they would not be targeting the National this year) and reducing the field in particular to thirty four was completely unnecessary. Whilst only one fence alteration was announced, the reduction in size of the second ditch, the eleventh/twenty seventh it did look as if the fences as a whole were smaller than usual and they certainly appeared to be brushed through with ease in the supporting races. This was evident from the Foxhunters and Topham where only two horses had actually fallen.

Leading Fancies

Once again there was Irish dominance with Irish trainers respondible for twenty six of the declared runners. At the head of the market was the Willie Mullins trained I AM MAXIMUS, running for JP McManus. He was an Aintree debutat but had won the previous years Irish Grand National having come from off the pace to lead close home and he had added two furher wins at the course including the Bobbyjo Chase where he had beaten last years runner up Vanillier. He was to start joint favourite with the mare LIMERICK LACE, another deubtant for JP but this one was trained by Gavin Cromwell. A second season chaser she had won half of her ten chases and had only once been out of the first three. She had won three of her four starts this term including the Mares Chase at the Festival. COKO BEACH had lowered her colours in the valuable Troytown Chase at Navan. The lovely grey was having a stunning season which had also seen him finish second on heavy gound in the Becher Chase but he had already run in two Nationals and didn't appear to stay. JP had a very strong hand this year and his seven year old novice MEETINGOFTHE WATERS also came in for support. He had won that Christmas cavalry charge that is the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown on only his second start over fences. MR INCREDIBLE has his own ideas about the game but he was another Mullins fancy who had been specificaly aimed at the race and his sole outing this season had been an encouraging second place in the Midlands Grand National.  The 2022 winner NOBLE YEATS who had finished fouth last year had been running over hurdles this season having been aimed for the Stayers Hurdle at the Festival. He had won the valuable Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham in January but was disappointing when he could only finish seventh in the Stayers itself. He still came into the reckoning with his third jockey in as many Nationals, champion elect Harry Coben taking the ride this year. Another interesting runner now at the veteran stage was 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner MINELLA INDO who had won a Grade Three event at Punchestown in the autumn before adapting well to the Cheltenhams cross country fences in December. He had not run since but his main aim, the Festival Cross Country chase had been abandoned so he was re-routed to AIntree. He jumped, he stayed and his rider Rachael Blackmore had already won one National with a "Minella". But what about the Brits ? To be fair despite the paucity of runners two featured in the top seven in the market. Last years winner CORACH RAMBLER looked to have a decent chance of retaining his title. As well as the National he had had the Gold Cup on the radar this season. After finishing unplaced in a small race at Haydock he had finished third in the Betfair Chase before his Gold Cup attempt where he finished an impressive third although it did look like hard work for him after the last. He had a better chance then some recent winners of winning this again. KITTYS LIGHT would be a very popular winner for Welsh trainer Christian Williams who's young daughter Betsy had been diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia. The horse had just scraped into the field and whilst he had not won this season had completed a magnificent double at the end of 2023 when he had won the Scottish Grand National and Bet 365 Gold Cup.

WIth Becher Chae winner Chambard and Irish outsider Run Wild Fred beng withdrawn after final declarations were made and with no reserve system in place just thirty two went to post, the smallest field in a quarter of a century. Surely with a reduced field it was time to reintroduce reserves !

The Class of 24

Most of the runners from 2024 were in training by the end of 2024-25. The following are not : -

CORACH RAMBLER (IRE) (2014) b g - Jeremy (USA) - Heart N Hope (IRE (Fourstars Allstar (USA) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 2021 & 2024. Only raced for four seasons and is the most lightly raced modern day National runner only seeing the racecourse eighteen times. The winner of the "last" Grand National. He showed little in his first three three points in 2019-20 pulling up on his first two starts but was eventually successful at the fifth attempt. He won two small races over timber in early 2021 but went chasing thereafter. He won three of his four of his seven chases in his novice season culminating with a two and three quarter length victory in the Ultima Chase at the Festival. He led in the final one hundred yards having been left wth plenty to do three out. He was a quirky individual and his run had to be timed to perfection as once he was in front he usually decided that he had done enough. He finished fourth in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury on his first start the following season but was then put away to preserve his handicap mark so he was next seen out in the Ultima after the weights for the National had been published (he did have a very canny trainer in Lucinda Russell). A second Ultima followed but this time he idled so badly on the run-in that he only just hung on from the very talented Fastorslow. Then came the National and in a race where it was all about the strength in depth of the Irish and the paucity of the British challenge he started favourite and in a race of some carnage especially on the first circuit he was in midfield before he made steady headway from second Valentines and found himself leading at the last. He again idled and held his head in his customary high way in the closing stages but he always had the second placed Vanillier held. In some respects his stunning success was completely overshadowed by the chaotic scenes that had marred the build up to the race and the first circuit. As a National and dual Festival winner another attempt at the Ultima seemed too easy and he was being touted as a possible Gold Cup contender. He finished third behind Royal Pigaille in the Betfair Chase and again was put away until Cheltenham. As things turned out he was not quite Gold Cup class but he equipped himself well eventually finishing third but he weakened in the run in. Sadly he came down at the very first fence in the National and then fell when riderless. He was sent to Ireland to contest the Punchestown Gold Cup but ran terribly and was eventually pulled up when tailed off. Connections decided that despite only being ten that he had done enough and his retirement was anounced in May 2024.

DELTA WORK (FR) (2013) b g - Network (GER) - Robbe (FR) (Video Rock (FR)) - Woon 2 hurdles and 9 chases between 2017 & 2025. Won on the flat in France in November 2016 before moving to Ireland. Never out of the first four in all his races over hurdles in 2017-18 he won the Pertemps Final at the Festival by a nose in a driving finishe over his more fancied stable companion Glenloe. He won his first three chases, two at Grade One level and was favourite for the RSA but he slightly disappointed when he could only finished third in a close finish. He ended that season with victory at the Punchestown Festival and he was clearly very very useful. He won two Grade One races at Leopardstown the following season (the Savills Chase and Irish Gold Cup) and had a real chance for the 2020 Gold Cup but he was could only finish fifth and he was not asked again. He was not so good the following season and connections decided that the Cross Country race at the Festival was his race. Not half - he spoilt the party when denying Tiger Roll victory on what was his retirement race in the dying strides. It is arguable that he was possibly the least popular Irish trained Festival winner of all time. He made his debut in the National on his next start. He was amongst the leaders turning for home and was disputing the lead two out but he was soon headed and was no match for Noble Yeats and Any Second Now eventually finishing a well beaten third. He started 2022-23 with victory over the Punchestown Banks course and won a second Cross Country Festival race. He was amongst the favourites for the 2023 National and was stil in contention when he surprisingly unseated at the fence before Bechers second time. It was ony the second time that he had failed to finish in a race. He only had two starts before his third National where he ran the race of his life to finish second behind I Am Maximus. Again he was never going to reach the winner but his performance was all the mose impressive as it was revealed that he had struck into his right hind leg during the race. Three Nationals - a second and a third - pretty impressive. He was last seen finishing a distatant fourth in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham in Janaury 2025 and sadly his death from colic was anounced a month later. A remarkable animal and much missed.

EKLAT DE RIRE (FR) (2014) b g - Saddex - Rochdale (FR) (Video Rock (FR)) - Won hurdle and 3 chases between 2020 & 2024. Lightly raced and ony ran thirteen times under rules. Won his point in November 2019 and after two spins over hurdles he won his first two chases in 2020-21 before unseating in the Brown Advisory (old RSA) at the Festval. The followig season he won a listed chase at Wexford and pulled up in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury but his season was over by December. He returned a year later in the Troytown Chase at Navan. A second trip to the Festival ended with him pulling up in the Ultima. The National was his next start and he finished fifteenth after stumbling badly at the nineteenth.  He did not race again and his death was announced a year later.

JANIDIL (FR) (2014) b g - Indian Daffodil (IRE) - Janidouce (FR) (Kaldounevees (FR)) - Won 3 hurdkes and 3 chases between 2018 & 2024. Started life in France where he finished second in a listed hurdle at Auteuil. Won three hurdles on the bounce in the autumn of 2019 but could only finish fifth in the Albert Bartlett at the Festival. Went chasing after that and won on his debut at Naas. He bypassed the UK festivals but won the Power Gold Cup at Fairyhouse but was no match for Eneurgename in the Ryanair Novice Chase at the Punchestown Festval. He only won one more race after that novice seasn but he ran in a host of big races. He finished a well beaten second in he 2022 Ryanair Chase at he Festival and seventh in the race a year later. His National prep race was the Stayers Hurdler (a fifth Festival visit) where he was unplaced. At Aintree he nearly got round but was pulled up after a tired jump at the last fencew when behind. He wa sadly killed in a fall in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown in December 2024.

Leading Fancies

There appeared less of an inbalance between the Britis and the Irish this year with Irish just having the advantage in numbers with eighteen runners compared with sixteen from the home side. Favourite though was a Brit the 7-1 shot IROKO trained by Josh Guerrero and Oliver Greenall (who was one of former Aintree chairman Lord Daresbury four jockey sons). Owned by JP McManus (one of five sporting the famous emeral green and gold hoops) he had only won one chase (on his debut over fences) in November 2024 but was a former Festival winner (he had won the Martin Pipe in 2023) and had finished runner up to future Gold Cup winner Iknowthewayyourthinkin in last years Mildmay Chase. He had chased home the very useful Grey Dawning at Kelso last time. He seemed a little inexperienced to me but it was nice to see a Brit at the head of the market. Last years winner I AM MAXIMUS had been a very easy winner but he had shown aboslutely notihng in two starts in Grade One company at Leopardstown this season. JP also  had the joint third favourite as well, the eight year old PERCEVAL LEGALLOIS who looked the more obvious choice of his runners. He had been running in big field handicaps in Ireland and had won the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas by an easy seven lengths and had then won a handicap hurdle at the same venue in a big field. For me he was the obvious choice. The lovely grey VANILLIER who has chased home Noble Yearts in 2022 came in for strong supprt. He had been very dissppointing in the race last year. He had won over the Punchestown Banks course earlier in the year but was well beaten by STUMPTON in the cross country event at the Cheltenham Festival. His conqueror came in for strong support on the basis of whay was so far a stellar campaign which had seen him with his last four races all over banks/cross country courses. HEWICK would be a very popular winner, how many horses have the King George VI Chase and American Grand National on their CV and he had also finished runner up in the Grand Course de Haies D'Auteuil in France. He had had a winning spell over hurdles at Thurles to freshen him up having bypassed Cheltenham. There was not one but two former King George VI Chase winners in the field as the Paul Nichols trained BRAVEMANSGAME who had won the 2022 edition was amongst the outsiders at 40-1. He had finished runner up in a Gold Cup and had been one of the countries leading chasers but that King George victory had been his last and he apepeared to be a shadow of his former self. Former Gold Cup winner MINELLA INDO had run a blinder in this race last year to finsihe third and but he had only had two races since then and MINELLA COCOONER, last years Bet365 Gold Cup winner looked a potential Aintree sort althogh he hadn't shown much this year. Of the outsiders NICK ROCKETT trended at 33-1, he was the least fancied of Willie Mullins six runners but he had only once finished out of the first four in his life. Fourth behind Perceval Legalois in the Paddy Power he had won a Grade Two event at Gowran and beaten rival Intense Raffles at Fairyhouse on his last start. I didn't really expect him to be competitive but ROYAL PAGAILLE, an old favourite and winner of the Betfair Chase at Haydock took his chance. He loved Haydock (all bar one of his six chase wins had come at the Lancashire track) but he had shown very little since his last win and to be honest the National didnt seem his race. I could't fancy him even though he was probably my favourite horse in training at the time.

This was a very very good renewal.

I realised as I spent the week working out who would make the final line up, waking on Grand National day wih the customary butterflies in my stomach and an insane feeling of excitement that this still truly was the greatest race of them all.
