2006 - Numbersixvalverde

Numbersixvalverde.jpeg

The winner

The following year he was restricted mostly to hurdles in an attempt to protect his handicap mark (now the Aintree factor is taken into account he was allotted nine stone more) and he finished a credible, albeit distant, sixth beaten forty lengths. The 2007 National turned out to be his last race although that was not the plan. He suffered a leg injury in September 2007 which ruled out a challenge for 2008 but he remained in training and the plan was to run in point to points before a return in 2009. However, he suffered a recurrence of the leg injury and his retirement was announced in January 2009.

Leading Fancies

Racegoers arriving for the Grand National meeting were greeted with a new look parade ring and unsaddling enclosure which was part one of the massive redevelopment of the racecourse which would leave it virtually unrecognisable. Gone was the old parade ring which had last been used at the Becher meeting the previous November which was replaced with a much larger one in front of Paddock Lodge which remained untouched. The new parade ring surprisingly lost none of the charm of its predecessor. The new winners enclosure though was to be frank a pale imitation of the iconic covered one which found a new lease of life as an exclusive bar. What was good though was the raised viewing area to enable for the first time the public to get a clear view of the National heroes. Modelled on Cheltenham perhaps. Phase two would see the construction of two new grandstands in time for the 2007 meeting. HEDGEHUNTER last years runaway winner was a worthy joint-favourite on the back of a career best performance in second place in War Of Attritions Gold Cup. He appeared to have the best chance of many recent winners of winning back-to-back Nationals. He disputed favouritism with CLAN ROYAL. Twice a winner over the National fences but desperately unlucky in the National itself first when he nearly ran off the course in the closing stages in 2004 and even worse last year when carried out at second Bechers when leading. Running over hurdles this year there was no reason why this couldn't be a case of third time lucky. The punters certainly thought so and it was hard to see past these two Aintree specialists. JACK HIGH had been very useful last Spring chasing home Numbersixvalderde in the Irish National and winning the Bet 365 Gold Cup at Sandown on his first start for new connections (beating Juveigneur). Running in good company in Ireland this year but sucessful just the once against Nil Desperandum at Fairyhouse on his last start. He would be one of the favourites. INNOX was the hope of France and he had finished seventh in this last year. Mostly raced in the UK and won at Cheltenham and the Racing Post Chase at Kempton on his next start and had obvious chances. JOES EDGE had just touched off Cornish Rebel in the Scottish National last season. He had been highly tried, unplaced in the Hennessy and thirteenth at odds of 100-1 in the Gold Cup on his last start. GARVIVONIAN had sprung a surprise at long odds to win the Becher Chase in a blanket finish (becoming the first Irish trained winner of the race) and another of the strong Irish challenge NUMBERSIXVALVERDE had been highly tried as a novice chaser in 2005 winning both the Thyestes Chase and the Irish Grand National. Aimed for this all season he had been running mosty over hurdles. Ruby Walsh, his regular partner was claimed on Hedgehunter so his young Irish replacement was making his National debut  A very interesting runner. One outsider that took  the eye at 100-1 was a horse who, for a brief time in 2001, had been the best chaser in the UK. FIRST GOLD a winner of a King George VI Chase and two Bowls at this meeting but now at thirteen years old he had not won for three years and was a shadow of his former self. Sad to see such a great chaser start at such long odds though.

4.15 JOHN SMITH`S  GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLE CHASE £305,060 to the winner, £125,230 to the second, £62,650 to the third, £31,290 to the fourth, £15,680 to the fifth & £7,840 to the sixth

The Class of 2006

AMBERLEIGH HOUSE (IRE) (1992) br g Buckskin - Chancy Gal (Al Sirat) - Won a NH flat race, a hurdle and 6 chases between 1997 & 2006. Originally trained in Ireland by Michael Hourigan where he was only a very average hurdler but showed better form over fences winning the Grade 2 Kinloch Brae Chase a Thurles in February 2000 and a Grade 3 handicap at the Punchestown Festival later that year. Seen that day by the legendary Ginger McCain who was convinced that the horse had potential to run well in the National. He persuaded John Halewood to purchase him and the horse was bought for £75,000. Things did not initially go to plan in the UK as the horse showed nothing in three starts and after a lacklustre performance at Haydock he came to his first National an unconsidered 150-1 outsider. He got no further than the first Canal when he was the first horse to be hampered by the riderless Paddys Return who ran down the fence and they set off a chain reaction that saw nine horses put out of the race. Jockey Warren Marston was knocked out of the saddle but later performed heroics when he assisted the stricken Jim Culloty who`s mount Village King had fallen on him.  He continued riderless before pulling up just before the water. The following season he returned to Aintree with Marston again in the saddle and starting at odds of 33-1 he won the Becher Chase by two lengths beating that years National brave runner up Smarty. A spell over hurdles at Haydock followed but with just one win from six starts in the UK the horse was only allotted nine stone six in the handicap for the 2002 National. That year saw a record one hundred and forty four entries and he needed a staggering thirty six above him to drop out to guarantee a run. His outspoken trainer was scathing that a horse with proven winning form over the unique fences could be forced to miss out on the big one and the following year Phil Smith did take into account the so called "Aintree  factor" when framing the weights. A year too late though as he narrowly missed the cut for the National and had to run over the inadequate distance of the Topham as consolation where he finished unplaced. After finishing a distant third to Ardent Scout in the Becher he rightfully took his place in the 2003 National. Ridden now by Graham Lee (making his National debut) the pair were going extremely well from the second Canal Turn but could not match the finishing speed of Montys Pass and was just caught in the closing stages by Supreme Glory to end up in third pace. The following autumn he was touched off by the shortest of short heads by Clan Royal in the most thrilling finish yet seen in a Becher Chase but he spectacularly turned the tables on him in the 2004 National. Held up early on he was still only a distant fourth by the final fence but events fell into place for him. The long time leader Hedgehunter fell, Lord Atterbury was exhausted and a tired Clan Royal (who's rider had lost his whip) veered onto the Mildmay course as they entered the Elbow. Ploughing a lone furrow on the outside Lee was able to catch his two exhausted rivals to record an emotional win for the man forever associated with the great race. This was a record equalling fourth win for McCain, a staggering twenty seven years after Red Rums third triumph. Whilst Amberliegh House remained in training for another two years age was catching up with him and in the 2005 National he finished tenth without ever troubling the leaders and in what was to be his final race at the age of fourteen he lined up in 2006 and was wisely not given to  hard a race. He was pulled up when out of contention at the twenty first. Amberleigh House did not run at Aintree until he was nine years old but in a five year period he ran in five Nationals, five Becher Chases and a Topham. He jumped a staggering two hundred and forty five National fences. A wonderful horse.

BARON WINDRUSH (1998) - b g Alderbrook - Dame Scarlet (Blakeney) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 2002 & 2009 the highlight of which was victory in the 2007 Midlands Grand National. The previous year he unseated at the third in the National and pulled up in the Scottish National (he did win Warwicks Classic Chase that year so it wasn`t all failure). Prone to making mistakes he never won again after Uttoxeter and his form tailed away thereafter. Last raced at Newbury in November 2009.

COLNEL RAYBURN (IRE) (1996) b g  Un Desperado - Super Boreen (Boreen) - Won a NH Flat race, 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 2001 & 2006. Very tall and dare I say it a rather ugly individual. Only raced twice in the UK and both times it was in the National and he pulled up both times at the twenty seventh fence. Only raced one more time after his 2006 attempt in a hurdle race at the Punchestown Festival.

CORNISH REBEL (IRE) (1997) br g Un Desperardo - Katdy (Millers Mate) - Won a NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 2003 & 2008. Won his sole NH Flat race and on his debut over hurdles and fences. Finished third behind Trabolgan in both the 2005 RSA Chase and the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. In between he narrowly failed by the shortest of short heads to Joes Edge in the Scottish Grand National and in doing so foiled Ruby Walsh in his attempt to win Welsh, Midlands, Aintree, Irish and Scottish Nationals in one season. The following year he was outclassed in the Gold Cup and failed in the National when conditions were against him. Not so good thereafter although he managed a win at Cheltenham on New Years Day. He was a last minute withdrawal due to injury in 2007 and pulled up in the Scottish National. Last seen running unplaced in the 2008 Christies Foxhunters at the Festival.

FIRST GOLD (FR) (1993) b g Shafoun - Nuit D`Or II (Pot D`Or) - Won a hurdle and 10 chases between 1997 & 2006. Burst onto the UK scene in the 2000 King George VI Chase when he destroyed a top class field including the likes of Florida Pearl, Edredon Bleu, Beau and See More Business by eleven lengths. In doing so he provided Francois Doumen with his fifth and final victory in the mid season classic. Prior to that he had run eleven times on the bounce at Auteuil winning Frances two premier chases the Grand Steeplechase de Paris and the Prix La Haye Josselin (and in doing so prevented the legendary Al Capone from wining the race for the eighth consecutive time). As a result of this victory he was catapulted to favouritism for the Gold Cup despite a shock defeat in his next start at Newbury when he was beaten by up and coming novice Shotgun Willy. Sold to J P McManus after that Newbury defeat he remained with Doumen in France but only raced there two more times. With the abandonment of the Festival due to foot and mouth he had to settle for the Martell Cup which he won in a canter on bottomless ground (something he was used to coming from France). Despite his season ending in disappointment (when he unseated in the Gold Cup consolation at Sandown) he ended the year as Timeforms top rated chaser with a rating of 180 which makes him the top rated horse in these pages. Perhaps it is churlish to say it but his career was something of a disappointment after that trail blazing season as he only won two more times in twenty five starts. He was continuously campaigned in the highest class running in three more King Georges (fourth in 2001, third in 2003 and fifth in 2004), two Gold Cups (flopped in 2003 pulling up but ran a blinder in 2004 when he made most of the running before weakening two out to finish fifth). He did win the Heineken Gold Cup at the Punchestown festival during a brief purple patch in the spring of 2003 and he loved the Mildmay course where won a second Martell Cup in 2003. He also finished second in the race twice in 2004 and 2005. He was often entered for the National and was normally allotted top weight but always chose the Mildmay race. However at the end of his career connections opted for one attempt at the National. Way past his best having not won for three years he started at 100-1 but ran credibly on the first circuit being up with the leaders but he was struggling when he unseated at the Foinavan fence. It was to be his last race. In total he won £885,101 in win and place money. He enjoyed his retirement at his owners Martinstown stud dying in January 2011 of laminitis.

FOREST GUNNER (1994) ch g Gunner B - Gouly Duff (Party Mink) - Won 3 hurdles and 5 chases between 2001 & 2006. Lightly raced throughout his career (won a novice hurdle at Aintree in May 2001) and was already ten years old when he ran away with the 2004 Foxhunters in what was only his second hunter chase. Ridden that day by trainers wife Carrie Ford who had unbelievably given birth only ten weeks earlier. Following on with an effortless win in the Grand Sefton Chase (ridden that time by conditional jockey Peter Buchanon) and the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup at Haydock and he was all the rage for the National. Ford had stated that it was her intention to ride in the National and she even turned professional for the race. Understandably there was a great deal of publicity as Ford had a real chance of being the first female jockey to figure in a National finish and despite some good-natured "joshing" from loveable misogynist Ginger McCain the pair put up a credible display although they weakened in the closing stages to finish fifth having never looked like getting close to Hedgehunter. Ford retired immediately afterwards and Nina Carberry took the ride thereafter. Sadly his form deserted him the following season, he unseated early in the Becher Chase and finished a distant last of the nine finishers in the National itself. He raced one more time at Aintree when he came down at Bechers in the Becher Chase.

GARVIVONNIAN (IRE) (1995) b g Spanish Place - Garvivonnia (Belfalas) - Won 6 hurdles and 5 chases between 1999 & 2008. Only an average chaser in Ireland but did win 2003 Cork National (pulled up in 2005 Irish Grand National). Surprise 33-1 winner in a blanket finish of the 2005 Becher Chase. As a result was quietly fancied for the big one but seemed to hate it second time around and was struggling when he was pulled up before the water. It was surprising to see him return to Aintree but he lined up in the 2006 Becher Chase and he came down at Bechers. Showed nothing in hurdles and in points later in his career.

HAUT DE GAMME (FR) (1995) ch g  Morespeed - Chantaloinette (Royal Charter) - Won 4 hurdles and 7 chases between 1999 & 2007. Won eight times in his native France. Finished fourth over the cross country course at Cheltenham on his fourth start in the UK in November 2004. Had a pretty good Aintree record finishing second to Cregg House in the 2005 Topham and completed the course in two Becher Chases in 2005 and 2006. Not so good in the National itself. Carrying my each-way bet he fell at the twentieth when a beaten horse. Last raced at Ayr in May 2007.

HEROS COLLONGES (FR) (1995) b g Dom Alco - Carmen Collonges (Olmeto) - Won 5 chases between 2001 & 2008. Very useful novice chaser when trained by Guillaume Macaire in France winning three chases there and romped home by twenty seven lengths in a novice chase at Kempton in January 2002. That was considered to be one of the best performances by a novice chaser that season but a tendon injury picked up in training not only ruled him out of his intended target the RSA Chase but the next three years. Now with Paul Nicholls after a warm up spin over hurdles he landed a listed event at Wincanton. Ran well in the 2005 National but didn`t last home eventually finishing eighth and it was the same story in the Becher Chase later that year when looking like holding a winning chance he weakened in the closing stages. Unseating at the Chair in the 2006 National his form later deserted him and he was pulled up in his next five starts. (He was allocated bottom weight  in the handicap for the 2007 National  (not surprisingly he was eliminated). He last raced at Bangor in December 2008.

INCA TRAIL (IRE) (1996) br g Un Desperado - Katday (Millers Mate) - Full brother to triple Gold Cup winner Best Mate but not as good. Did win a NH flat race 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 2002 & 2006. Won his only start in Ireland. Described by Timeform as a "quirky individual" he still completed the Royal Artillery/Grand Military Gold Cup double in 2006 when trained by Paul Nicholls. Moved to Ginger McCain he put up a superb performance in the 2006 National to finish eighth having been prominent until fading two out. Later finished unplaced in the Betfred Gold Cup. Last raced in the Becher Chase of 2006 finishing fifth and sadly died later that season.

INNOX (FR) (1996) b g Lute Antique - Savane III (Quart de Vin) - Won 5 chases  between 2000 & 2008. Trained in France for most of his career but was a frequent visitor to the UK. Came to Aintree in 2005 on the back of two good wins in competitive handicaps at Cheltenham & Sandown and in the National itself was prominent on the second circuit before weakening to finish seventh. The following year he fell at the first and his career nosedived thereafter. Pulled up in a Welsh National he ended his racing days with Jonjo O`Neill running in novice hurdles at Bangor.

IRIS ROYAL (FR) (1996) b g Garde Royale - Tchela (La Naine Jaune) - Won 4 hurdles and 5 chases between 1999 & 2008. Hit a purple patch during 2003-04 winning two valuable handicaps, the First National Bank Gold Cup at Ascot and the Tripleprint Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Ended the season finishing second behind Royal Auclair in the Cathcart Chase at the Festival. Off the course for twenty months and was not the same horse on his return. 100-1 outsider for the 2006 National he pulled up after a circuit. Only reached the frame once in his next nine starts before retirement.

IT TAKES TIME (IRE) (1994) b g Montelimar - Dysart Lady (Kings Ride) - Won 2 NH Flat races, 7 hurdles and  2 chases between 1999 & 2007. Unbeaten in five novice hurdles and proved to be a very good staying hurdler finishing third in both the Stayers and Aintree Hurdles in 2002. Ultimately wasn`t as good over fences with just one major win to his credit, the Ascot Chase in 2005 (run that year at Lingfield). Held up in the 2005 National he stayed on to finish fourth but such waiting tactics did not serve him well the following year when he never really got into the race and he was pulled up in the closing stages. Finished fourth in the 2005 Becher Chase and pulled up in the 2006 Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown. Last raced at Market Rasen in September 2007.

IZNOGOOD (FR) (1996) b/br g Shafoun - Vancia (Top Dancer) - Won 2 hurdles and 2 chases between 2000 & 2007. Won the grade one Tolworth Hurdle on only his third start in the UK in 2001. For a horse who started at 200-1 in the Gold Cup and National of 2006 he was actually a good handicap chaser. Rarely won but finished second in the 2002 RSA Chase, fifth in the At Theraces Gold Cup in 2003, third in the Racing Post Chase, second in the Mildmay Of Flete Cup in 2004 and second in another Racing Post Chase in 2005. Fell in Topham Chase in 2004 and last raced at Newbury in March 2007. Raced twice in points without success.

JUST IN DEBT (IRE) (1996) b/br g Montelimar - No Doubt (Oats) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 2001 & 2008. Originally trained in Ireland where he won on his debut at Cork in November 2002 beating future National winner Hedgehunter by twelve lengths. Moved to the UK in 2004 and unseated at the twenty third in the National and then pulled up in the Scottish National two weeks later. Became something of an Aintree regular jumping one hundred and thirty nine fences successfully. He finished second in the 2004 Becher Chase behind Silver Birch and was only beaten a length in a blanket finish in the race a year later. Never fared so well in the National finishing just once in 2005 (he fell at first Bechers in 2006). Eliminated in 2007 he ran in the Topham instead finishing eighth. He last raced at Perth in September 2008.

JUVEIGNEUR (FR) (1997) ch g Funny Baby - Azurea (On My Way) - Winner of 5 chases and a hurdle between 2002 & 2008. Won 4 chases for Guillaume Macaire in France and won the Kim Muir at the Festival on only his third UK start.  Surprisingly he only won one more race under rules a three runner novice hurdle at Plumpton starting at the ludicrous odds of 20-1 ON. Didn`t like Aintree , made lots of mistakes and finished unplaced in the 2005 Topham and got no further than the first fence in both the 2005 Becher Chase and 2006 National. Away from Aintree he was a fine servant to connections finishing second in the 2005 Betfred Gold Cup, second in the 2006 Hennessy, third in the 2006 Welsh National and just missed out on a Festival double when just touched off by a short head in a three way photo finish by Joes Edge in the 2007 William Hill Trophy. He also pulled up in a second Welsh National, a Scottish National and an Irish National. Last raced under rules at Doncaster in January 2008 and was later sold to Ireland where he ran in Irish point to points until 2011 winning seven of them.

LE ROI MIGUEL (FR) (1998) b g Point of No Return - Loumir (Bob`s Dusty) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 2001 & 2006. Fell in 2003 Arkle but won the Maghull Novices Chase on Grand National day and followed up with victory in the Grade 1 Swordstown Chase at the Punchestown Festival. On the back of these victories he was rated joint third novice chaser for the season by Timeform. Didn`t quite live up to that initial promise but did win the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon, finished fourth in the King George VI Chase and chased home the magnificent Moscow Flyer in the Melling Chase. Showed nothing thereafter and was discounted at 150-1 when he ran in the 2006 National and never going well was pulled up. Sold for 33,000 guineas at Doncasters May sales his career under rules was over at the age of eight. Three years later he was seen running in point to points - his form figures - PPPP0

LORD OF ILLUSION (IRE) (1997)  b g  Mister Lord - Jellaride (Kings Ride) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 2002 & 2010. Useful novice in 2004-05 winning five times. Outclassed in both the Hennessy and the Gold Cup (finishing last in a big field). Amongst the leaders on the first circuit in the 2006 National but lost his place rapidly after the water and was pulled up (it transpired he had broken a blood vessel). Only reached the frame twice more over fences and was a distant fifteenth in the 2007 Topham but he did manage to win three point to points in 2009.

NATIVE UPMANSHIP (IRE) (1993) ch g  Be My Native - Hi`Upham (Deep Run) - Won a NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 13 chases between 1998 & 2006. One of the best two and half mile chasers to come out of Ireland during the decade and winning-most horse featured here. Won a valuable novice hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in 1998. Top novice chaser the following season winning his first three chases including the Dennys Gold Medal Chase at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting. Started favourite for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham but made mistakes and could only finish fourth but he reverted back to wining ways in the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse. The following season he won the Fortria Chase and beat Florida Pearl by a head in the Punchestown Chase (Florida Pearl was to reverse the placing by a short-head the following season). He twice finished second in the Queen Mother Chase in 2002 and 2003 but his finest moments came when he won the Melling Chase in 2002 (beat Wahiba Sands by a length) and in 2003 (beat Seebald by a length). He also won a second Punchestown Chase in 2002. Moscow Flyer prevented him from winning three Melling Chases in 2004.  He was thirteen and in the twilight of his career when he lined up in the National and without a win for nearly two years was unconsidered at 100-1. He dwelt at the start and was tailed off for the first cicuit. He was starting to make ground when he was hampered at the nineteenth and that was it. He refused four from home. He raced just one more time when finishing a distant last of six behind Gold Cup winner War of Attrition in the Guinness Gold Cup at the Punchestown Festival.

NIL DESPERANDUM (IRE) (1997) b g  Un Desperado - Still Hoping (Kambalda) - Won a NH flat race, 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 2002 & 2007. Useful novice hurdler (finished sixth behind Hardy Eustace in the Sun Alliance Novices Hurdle in 2002). Won his first two chases the second of which was the Grade 1 Drinmore Chase at Fairyhouse in November 2003. Had a great record over the National fences completing the course each of the four times he raced. Made his debut finishing a never dangerous sixth behind Hedgehunter in 2005. He then flopped badly in the Becher Chase but ran much better in his second National and was one of four horses who drew clear in the run-in. He looked booked for third spot but Clan Royal got a second wind and just touched him off preventing what would have been an unprecedented Irish one two three. He was a disappointing eleventh in the Scottish National on hs next start. For the following season he was trained by Venetia Williams and after a much better performance in the Becher Chase he won the Eider Chase by an impressive twelve lengths and was propelled to favouritism for the 2007 National. Sadly on his next start, the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter he broke down badly and had to be put down.

RINCE RI (IRE) (1993) ch g Orchestra - Mildreds Ball (Blue Refrain) - Won 3 hurdles & 9 chases between 1997 & 2006. Very useful Irish chaser who won his first three hurdles (all at Navan) and his first chase (also at Navan). During his novice campaign he won two Grade 3 chases and finished with victory in the Grade 1 Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse. He won two Ericsson Chases and a Pillar Property Chase at Cheltenham in 2002 but despite being aimed for the Gold Cup three times he only managed to line up in the Blue Riband once in 2000 when he was a very disant fourth when he unseated three out despite Ruby Walshs best endeavours to keep the partnership intact (it was his first ride in the race). A bout of colic scuppered his attempt in 2002 and when he returned he was not quite the same although he did win the Bobbyjo Chase in February 2003 and finished second behind First Gold in the Heineken Gold Cup at Punchestown. Lightly raced in his final seasons and to be fair the National was something of an afterthought. It was to be his final race and he started at 100-1. He refused in the closing stages having never really got into the race.

RISK ACCESSOR (1995) b g Commanche Run - Bellatollah (Bellman) - Won 4 hurdles and 8 chases between 1999 & 2008. Useful Irish Chaser who didn`t get far in his first two National attempts but it was a case of third time lucky as he put up a solid performance to finish fifth in 2006. He ran ten times at Cheltenham without success although did finish second the 2003 Grand Annual, second in the 2003 Tripleprint Gold Cup and fifth in the 2006 Kim Muir. Eliminated in 2007 & 2008 he ran in the Topham instead in 2007 finishing eleventh. Enjoyed a renaissance in 2007-08 winning four chase on the bounce at  Folkestone, Market Rasen, Worcester and Bangor in what was his last race in February 2008.

ROSS COMM (1996) gr g Minster Son - Yemaail (Shaadi) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 2003 & 2008. Won three times at Worcester and twice at Carlisle. Fell in 2005 Hennessy but won his prep race for the National at Bangor. That was his final victory and he fell early in the 2006 National. He was highly tried the following year running in several big races, fifth in the 2007 Scottish National was his best performance, He last raced at Cartmel in July 2004

SHOTGUN WILLY (1994) ch g Be My Native - Minorettes Girl (Strong Gale) - Won 4 hurdles and 4 chases between 1999 & 2006. Unbeaten over hurdles he won his first two starts over fences before losing his unbeaten record with a terrible display behind Bacchanal in the Feltham Novices Chase. Then in March 2001 he provided the shock of the season when, on only his fourth start over fences he beat the countries leading chaser, First Gold at level weights in the AON Chase at Newbury. Connections may have been tempted for a crack at the Gold Cup after this performance but this was the year of foot and mouth and with Cheltenham abandoned he had to settle for the Mildmay Novices Chase on bottomless ground at Aintree when he was beaten a distance by Whats Up Boys. Lightly raced and highly tried the following season he failed in the Gold Cup and put up his best performance when finishing second in the Scottish National. Unfortunately he sustained a leg injury at Ayr which kept him off the course for nearly eleven months. When he returned in what was probably the training performance of the season when under top weight of eleven stone twelve he beat an ultra competitive field in Haydocks Red Square Vodka Gold Cup a performance which propelled him to favouritism in what was probably the most open and competitive Grand National for years. He ran poorly at Aintree, never getting into the race and Ruby Walsh pulled him up before second Bechers. He turned out again in the Scottish National equipped with first time blinkers as he hadn`t been felt to have done a great deal at Aintree but put up another below par performance. That was it really for this very popular and talented animal who was just short of top class. He missed the following season and showed nothing in three starts in 2004-05 (pulled up in both Welsh and Midlands Nationals). Next seen out at very long odds in the 2006 National having been leased to the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. Sported the most colourful colours ever seen in a National and blazed the trail for a circuit before rapidly weakening and pulling up. His final start was in the Scottish National where he completed quite a feat - four consecutive "Nationals" - four pulled ups.

SIR OJ (IRE) (1997) br g Be My Native - Fox Glen (Furry Glen) - Won NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 7 chases between 2002 & 2006. Had a very inauspicious start to his career finishing twentieth in a twenty two runner bumper at Naas in June 2002. A year later won his next flat race and also won on his debut over hurdles and fences. Proved to be very useful over fences winning a Grade 2 event at Punchestown in November 2004. Finished unplaced in the Arkle Chase at the 2005 Festival and three days later lined up again to finish a credible fourth in the inaugural Jewson Novices Chase. The following year he went from strength to strength winning Cheltenhams December Gold Cup (run that year in memory of the late Robin Cook) and was fancied for the Ryanair Chase but fell. Didn`t look like he was enjoying it at Aintree and was trailing most of the way and was last to jump second Bechers when he fell. The following autumn he showed he had suffered no ill -effects by landing two Grade 2 chases at Gowran Park and Clonmel but mysteriously was not seen out again.

TAKE THE STAND (1996)  b g  Witness Box - Denys Daughter (Crash Course) - Won 2 hurdles and 14 chases in a ten year career between 2000 & 2010. A wonderful servant to connections who was still winning races at the age of fourteen. Won Summer National at Uttoxeter in 2004 and finished second at 25-1 to Kicking King in the 2005 Gold Cup. On the back of that race was fancied for the National but unseated at the Chair. In 2006 he chose the slightly easier option of the Betfair Bowl where he finished second to Celestial Gold. In later years became a useful hunter chaser and won over the Mildmay course at one of Aintree`s evening meetings. A return to the National fences was less successful which saw him falling in the 2009 Foxhunters. Last raced at Uttoxeter in June 2010.

THEREALBANDIT (IRE) (1997) b g Torus - Sunrise Highway VII (damsire unregistered) - Won 5 hurdles and 4 chases between 2003 & 2006. Won his sole point to point in Ireland. After four victories during the summer of 2003 he won a hurdle race at Cheltenhams Open meeting (his first of seven consecutive outings at Prestbury Park) before switching to fences. So impressive were his first two performances that all talk of an assault on the RSA Chase was put on hold whilst serious consideration was given to a Gold Cup challenge. A fall in his first start out of novice company in the Pillar Property Chase did not dent confidence and despite this being only his fourth start over fences he started 15-2 second favourite in the Gold Cup. Sadly as with Martin Pipes other Gold Cup novices the task was beyond him. Held up on the first circuit he never got competitive and finished tailed off seventh of eight finishers beaten a total of forty eight lengths. The following season after a spell over hurdles he won a small race at Cheltenham and thereafter was campaigned in the highest company with a second assault on the Gold Cup planned. He clearly wasn`t top class as he weakened badly in the closing stages to finish seventh behind Kicking King in the King George and although he got within seven lengths of the popular grey Grey Abbey in the Pillar Property Chase he was again soundly beaten in the Gold Cup. He showed very little thereafter save for one glorious day at Wetherby on Boxing day when he turned the tables on Grey Abbey and beat Gold Cup runner up Take the Stand in the valuable Rowland Meyrick to give young Andrew Glassonbury the highlight of his career. His next race was the National and whilst he was unconsidered at 50-1 he actually ran very well. Up with the leaders throughout he survived a bad mistake at the water and it was only when the petrol emptied after the twenty sixth fence that he was pulled up when still in contention. He finished fifth in the Bet 365 Gold Cup on his next start when he jumped badly left throughout. That turned out to be his final racecourse appearance. That wasn`t the plan though but in November 2006 he suffered an accident in training and had to be put down.

TYNEANDTHYNEAGAIN (1995) b g Good Thyne - Radical Lady (Radical) - Won 4 hurdles and 2 chases between 2000 & 2006. His mum completed the course in Party Politics National in the 1992. Not out of the first three in his first twelve races. He only won two chases, both in the winter of 2004 but they were both decent long distance events, the Great Yorkshire Chase and  Eider Chase at Newcastle. Would have had a chance in the 2004 National but was withdrawn on the day due to unsuitable ground. Missed the following season and switched stables. Showed little in his two prep races in 2006 and in the National was a first fence faller. That is not the end of the tale though as he continued riderless jumping every fence until the fourth last when he seemed to run into the ditch.  As he was being led back to the stables it was discovered that he had suffered serious spinal injuries which sadly necessitated his humane destruction.

WHISPERED SECRET (GER) (1999) b g  Selkirk - Wells Whisper (Sadlers Wells) - Won 4 hurdles and 4 chases between 2003 & 2008. Won on the flat at Neuss in Germany. Won three chases as a novice but was still inexperienced when he lined up at Aintree on what was only his ninth start over fences. Predictably he didn`t get very far but retained some ability and later won a Grade 3 handicap at Cheltenham in January 2007. Last seen pulling up in the 2008 Kim Muir at the Festival.

2007 - Silver Birch

Silver Birch.jpg

The winner

A tendon injury prevented Silver Birch from defending his crown in 2008 but he ran a blinder in 2009 and was still in contention when he fell at second Bechers. He was entered again in 2010 but narrowly missed the cut. Connections wanted to give him one final spin over the Aintree fences and he finished twelfth in the Topham (ridden by his intended National partner Jason Maguire) and was immediately retired.

Leading Fancies

The noughties saw a number of very open Grand Nationals and this years race which incidentally was run on the latest day in April (at the time - this was surpassed in 2023) in its history on an unseasonably warm day was no exception. There were three co-favourites and two were Aintree debutants. MONKERHOSTIN was a very versatile and popular horse. He had won the 2004 Coral Cup over hurdles at the Festival and was even better over fences as he had once beaten Kauto Star (in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter in November 2005). Narrowly beaten by Kicking King in the King George on his next start and this season he had finished fourth in the Gold Cup. He was the class horse of the race but it was his first attempt over these fences. JOES EDGE had finished seventh in this last year and this season had sprung a surprise at 50-1 to win the William Hill Trophy at the Festival in a three way photo which catapulted him to joint favouritism. I still preferred others though. The third co-favourite probably had the best chance of the three, POINT BARROW the winner of the 2006 Irish Grand National and this year had won the Leopardstown Chase. He was the one they had to beat. McKELVEY had won the valuable Summer National at Uttoxeter in 2006. He had finished fast in the closing stages of the Becher Chase on his Aintree debut but had left it too late and could only finish sixth in a blanket finish. Winner over hurdles last time. LONGSHANKS who had twice been placed in the Topham Chase and finished sixth in the Scottish National. Just one run this year but he was victorious in a small race at Newbury in the autumn. SIMON was running in the colours of the legendary Mercy Rimell, widow of National winning trainer Fulke. Sixth in the Welsh National but winner of the old Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster and Racing Post Chase at Kempton. He was another Aintree debutant but he held excellent chances if he took to the fences. EUROTREK was a very lightly raced runner who won the Becher Chase on his reappearance after a layoff. Not see out since but clearly liked the corse. Former winners HEDGEHUNTER such an impressive winner in 2005 and magnificent in defeat last year had just had two runs over hurdles this season as it was all about another tilt at this and the 2006 hero NUMBERSIXVALVERDE had equipped himself well on his warm up race at Fairyhouse and another big run was clearly on the cards. Also mention of a young Irish trainer called Gordon Elliott who was yet to train a winner in Ireland who was at the start of his career and his first National runner was a Paul Nicholls reject SILVER BIRCH. He was a former Becher Chase and Welsh National winner and one time National favourite but he then got injured and had not been so good thereafter. He had run well in his initial intended target over the Cheltenham cross country course at the Festival. LIBERTHINE was a useful mare with wins at the Festival and a Topham Chase victory last year. His young amateur rider had completed the Topham/Foxhunters double last year but was ineligible to ride in the National as he had not ridden enough winners. He had been given dispensation to ride this year and had proved his metal by adding a third win over the National fences with another Foxhunters victory this year. The mare had not shown much this season but would have each-way prospects.

The Class of 2007

BALLYCASSIDY (IRE) (1996) b g  Insan - Bitofabreeze (Callernish) - Won 5 hurdles and 10 chases between 2000 & 2008. Won his sole Irish point-to-point before moving to the UK and was a useful novice winning three races on the bounce in the summer of 2001. He repeated the feat in the summer of 2003 as a novice chaser which lead to a rather ambitious assault on the Galway Plate in which he finished unplaced. A third hat-trick of victories followed in the autumn of 2003 including a victory over the Mildmay course. 2003 ended with him chasing home the useful Strong Flow in Kemptons Feltham Novices Chase on Boxing Day. Often campaigned in the highest class he was some way short of the top as shown by his eighth place in the 2005 Gold Cup, tenth in the 2005 Hennessy, seventh in 2005 King George, fourteenth in 2006 Gold Cup and  pulling up in the 2006 King George. At Aintree his first National ended early (he blundered the second and his jockey clung on for dear life until gravity won strides before the third) but it is his second National in 2006 for which he will be remembered. Blazing the trail with Puntal he drew clear on the approach to Bechers and was still full of running and some way clear when he took the most sickening looking fall at Valentines. Thankfully he was quickly up on his feet and ran in a third National in 2007 where he was still in contention when he unseated at the second Canal. Raced one more time at Aintree pulling up in that years Becher Chase on what was his penultimate start. He raced in a veterans chase  at Newbury in March 2008 but didn`t sparkle and that was the end of his career over rules although he did win a point to point at  Erw Lon in January 2009. Would he have won in 2006 had he stood up ? Jockey Leighton Aspell said it was too early to say.

BOTHAR NA (IRE) (1999) ch g  Mister Lord - Country Course (Crash Course) - Won 5 chases between 2005 & 2009. Won a point to point and three hunter chases on the bounce in 2005 before stepping up in the class the following year finishing fourth in both the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters and also fourth in the champion hunters chase at the Punchestown Festival. Competed in much higher company the following season pulling up in both the Hennessy and the National. Returned to the amateur game later in his career but he did return once to Aintree finishing a close third to Gwanako in the 2008 Topham. Last seen during 2010-11 when he pulled up in three consecutive point to points.

CELTIC SON (FR) (1999) b g  Celtic Arms - For Kicks (Top Ville) - Won a NH flat race, 5 hurdles and a chase. Useful hurdler winning five times in January/February 2005 and later that season finished second in a handicap hurdle on Grand National day. Won on his chasing debut at Wincanton but never won another race and was only an average chaser. The National of 2007 was only his second race of the season having pulled up in the Racing Post Chase. He was never  a factor at Aintree and pulled up before second Bechers. Showed nothing thereafter and last raced at Huntingdon in December 2008,

CLAN ROYAL (FR) (1999) b g Chef de Clan - Allece du Rot  (Rex Magna) - Won 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 1999 & 2007. Won three times in Ireland when trained by Arthur Moore. Didn`t race from August 2001 until December 2002 when he made his debut for Jonjo O`Neill at Hereford. Won small races at Fontwell and Newbury before making his first visit to Aintree when he landed the Topham by two and a half lengths from Macs Gildoran (who I always thought was an ideal National horse but he never ran in the race). Thereafter his career was all about Aintree and apart from one trip to Ascot on his penultimate start he either ran over the National fences or over hurdles. A thrilling short head victory over Amberleigh House followed in the Becher Chase and on the back of two starts and two victories over the unique fences he was one of four co-favourites for the 2004 National. With the leaders throughout one can only wonder what would have happened had Liam Cooper not lost his whip at the twenty sixth fence and been able to keep the horse straight when, exhausted after the last, he nearly ran onto the Mildmay Course losing vital lengths. Bearing in mind he was only beaten three lengths by the fast finishing Amberleigh House...who knows. The following year he was famously carried out by two loose horses at Bechers when in a clear lead. Would he have won ? It was probably too far from home to say for certain - Hedgehunter was a very easy winner and his saddle was slipping dangerously on the run down to Bechers. He ran his heart out in 2006 but the weight was too much and he just held on for third place. He was a surprise first fence faller in the 2006 Becher Chase and he finished an honourable but distant eleventh in 2007. This was his last race. He had earnt his retirement.  He died at J P McManus` Martinstwon Stud in September 2013 aged seventeen.

CLOUDY BAYS (IRE) (1997) b g Hubbly Bubbly - Bellteen (Beau Charmer) - Won 6 hurdles and 3 chases between 2002 & 2008. Hit a purple patch in 2003-04 winning the valuable Troytown Chase at Navan and the Leopardstown Chase. Didn`t like the Aintree experience and was tailed off when he stopped at the Chair. Trailed in behind Neptune Collonges in the Guiness Gold Cup at the Punchestown Festival on his next start and he mostly ran in hurdles thereafter.

GALLANT APPROACH (IRE) (1999) ch g Roselier - Nicks Approach (Dry Dock) - Very lightly raced and only raced eleven timed under rules. Having won an Irish point-to-point he was successful in a hurdle and a chase in 2005-06 and won a chase at Newbury in November 2006. Finished seventh in the 2007 William Hill Trophy at the Festival but was never dangerous and made mistakes when finishing last of twelve finishers in the National. Didn`t race much afterwards although he did manage to win a point-to-point in 2011.

GRAPHIC APPROACH (IRE) (1998) b g Kings Ride  - Sharp Approach (Crash Course) - Won a NH flat race, a hurdle and 3 chases between 2002-07. Finished third in the Racing Post Plate at the Festival in 2006 and unseated his rider in the same race the following year. Sadly it was the circumstances of his demise that hit the headlines. A faller at second Bechers he got up seemingly unscathed and carried on riderless until he jumped a running rail and collided with three security guards before collapsing in front of the packed grandstands. He lay concussed for forty minutes and racing was delayed while vets spent two hours stabilising him. The last race of the card was eventually abandoned. He was moved to Liverpool University and began to recover well but after pleasing vets with his progress, he developed pneumonia and was put down on 9th May.

HOMER WELLS (IRE) (1998) b g Arctic Cider - Run and Shine (Deep Run) - Won NH flat race, 3 hurdles and 3 chases between 2003 & 2009. Won three novice hurdles on the bounce including a grade two event at Naas in 2004-05 and put up a superb performance for a novice finishing fourth in the long distance championship at the Punchestown Festival. Rather ambitiously connections next sent him to run at Auteuil in the valuable Prix La Barka but he finished unplaced. Hit another good run of form in the run-up to his Aintree challenge winning both the Thyestes and Bobbyjo Chases but at Aintree itself he never got into the race and was pulled up. Didn`t win again. In 2007-08 season he pulled up in both the Welsh and Irish Nationals. Last seen at the Punchestown Festival in May 2009.

JACK HIGH (IRE) (1995) b g Erdelistan - Lyntim (Fidel) - Won a NH Flat race, 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 2000 & 2008. Hit a rich vein of form in 2005 finishing three quarter length second to Numbersixvalverde in the Irish National before winning (on his UK debut) the Betfred (as the Whitbread was then known) Gold Cup beating Juveigneur by one and a quarter lengths (he finished ninth and fourth in the next two runnings of the race). Two famous fences were his undoing in his two Nationals - the Chair in 2006 & Bechers in 2007. Last seen in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse in February 2008.

JOES EDGE (IRE) (1997) b/br g Supreme Leader - Right dark (Buckskin) - Won a NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 2002 & 2008. Very useful novice he failed in the Jewson Novices Chase at the Festival but landed the amateur novices chase over the Mildmay course (the race after the National) and then pipped Cornish Rebel by the shortest of short heads to land the Scottish National at odds of 20-1. Highly tried the following year (unplaced in the Hennessy, started 100-1 in the Gold Cup and finished thirteenth) before finishing seventh in the 2006 Grand National. Sprung another major surprise in one of the most exciting finishes ever seen at the Festival in 2007 when starting at 50-1 he overhauled Juveigneur and Distant Thunder to win by another very short head in a three way photo for the William Hill Trophy having been a distant third at the last. As a result he started 8-1 co-favourite for the 2007 National but  pulled up early on the second circuit although it later transpired that he had finished lame. Only raced two more times and was last seen finishing down the field in the 2008 Kim Muir.

KANDJAR D`ALLIER (FR) (1998) gr g Royal Charter - Miss Akarad (Akarad) - Won a hurdle and 7 chases between 2001 & 2009. Won three times at Auteuil in his native France and the highlight of his UK career came when landing the 2006 Tommy Whittle Chase. Took a nasty looking fall at the Canal Turn in 2007 National but then put up a fine display riderless on the second circuit leading for most of the way until running onto the hurdles track. Still figured in the finish though. Ran in that years Becher Chase but unseated early. Won another race at Haydock in 2008 and was last seen out at Bangor in April 2009. Ran three times between the flags in 2010 but didn't show much.

LE DUC (FR) (1999) b g  Villez - Beberova (Synefos) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 2002 & 2010. Sprung a 33-1 shock when beating Triumph Hurdle winner Spectroscope by a head in the Anniversary Hurdle at the Aintree Festival in 2003. Went chasing thereafter and won on his debut at Wetherby. Didn`t get further than the first Canal in two National attempts in 2006 & 2007 but had a much better record over the fences in supporting races. Finished second and fourth in two Becher Chases, third in a Topham and later in his career fifth in a Foxhunters. Won the Royal Artillery Gold Cup in 2008, raced over the cross country course at Cheltenham and won two point-to-points in 2010. He last raced in the Cheltenham Foxhunters in March 2010.

LIBERTHINE (FR) (1999) b m Chemberlin - Libertina (Balsamo) - Won 3 hurdles and 3 chases between 2002 & 2007. Won twice at Auteuil and won on her UK debut at Stratford before finishing fourth in the Mildmay Chase in 2004. The following year she won the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup at odds of 25-1 giving his talented amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen his first win at the Festival. Making her Aintree debut in that years Topham she finished down the field but the following year she was victorious. Incidentally she only ran in the 2006 Topham because her rider had not partnered enough winners over fences to qualify for the National. Absurd really as Waley-Cohen won both supporting races over the National fences that year. The rules were changed the following year and the pair lined up in the National. Leading from second Bechers to the twenty sixth fence she didn`t quite stay and weakened to finish fourth. It was to be her last race and she was retired to he paddocks. By the end of the year she was in foal to Arc winner Helissio.

LIVINGSTONEBRAMBLE (IRE) (1996) b g Supreme Leader - Killing Side (General Ironside) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 2002 & 2008. Raced over hurdles and fences in preparation for the 2007 National. Made his UK debut in his prep race, the Racing Post Chase at Kempton finishing down the field. Started 100-1 in the National and came down atiuoi first Bechers. Didn`t race in the UK again and showed little thereafter. Last raced in January 2008 at Gowran Park.

LONGSHANKS (1997) b g Broadsword - Brass Castle (Carlingford Castle) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 2002 & 2007. Lightly raced individual who won his first three chases. Finished second in the 2005 Topham and was a fourth a year later (when he just failed to get into the National field). Also finished sixth in that years Scottish National. Managed to get in the race in 2007 but was a well beaten seventh. The National proved to be his last race as although he was kept in training with another assault on the National in mind but once again he just failed to make the cut.

MONKERHOSTIN (FR) (1997) b g  Shining Steel - Ladoun (Kaldoun) - Won 6 hurdles and 6 chases between 2001 & 2010. Very popular horse although he was not on his best behaviour when he lined up as co-favourite for the 2007 National. Combined running over hurdles and fences and won the Coral Cup at the Festival in 2004. Also won the Rendlesham Hurdle at Kempton in the same season. Prior to those successes he had finished unplaced in handicap hurdles at the National meeting in both 2002 and 2003 and was sixth in the Aintree Hurdle a year later. He had enjoyed some success over fences up to this point but reverted to fences full time in October 2004 and won the Bonusprint Gold Cup at Cheltenham in December (although he was fortunate in that the leader Our Vic fell at the last). The following season he beat a little known French import called Kauto Star in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter. He was placed in both the Paddy Power Gold Cup and the Peterborough Chase and then put up perhaps his best performance when he only narrowly failed to catch Gold Cup winner Kicking King in the King George VI Chase (which was run that year at Sandown - he clearly acted up the Sandown hill as he would show later in his career). He wasn`t good enough in the Gold Cup finishing a distant sixth. In 2006-2007  he was placed again in the Peterborough Chase and the King George VI Chase and was fourth in Kauto Stars first Gold Cup. He was subject to last minute support and was sent off 8-1 co-favourite for the National but it was not a happy experience. He jumped poorly and was amongst the backmarkers when he stopped at the seventh fence. The following season he was lightly raced and was unconsidered in the Bet 365 Gold Cup where at odds of 25-1 he stayed on strongly up the Sandown hill and prevailed by two and three quarter lengths over the ever consistent Royal Auclair. He also tasted victory at Sandown the following season in a veterans race. He tried his luck over the cross country course at he 2010 Festival and was last seen putting up another good performance at Sandown when he finished fourth in the 2010 Bet 365 Gold Cup.

NUMBERSIXVALVERDE (IRE) (1996) b g  Broken Hearted - Queens Tricks (Le Bavard) - Won 1 hurdle and 4 chases between 2001 & 2007. Probably the least catchy named National winner of all time being named after his owners villa in Portugal. Took time to find the winners enclosure failing to win in six National Hunt flat races but fared better as a hurdler not finishing out of the first three in five starts in 2002-03 winning one of them. Off the course for a  year he showed nothing in his second season as a hurdler and was switched to chasing. Won the Thyestes Chase and the Irish Grand National during that first season in 2004-05....not bad for a novice. Aintree was the target in 2006 and like so many Irish challengers before him whilst kept busy only two of his six races prior to Aintree were over fences. The National was his first start in the UK and only his eleventh start over fences. Ruby Walsh had ridden him at Fairyhouse but he was claimed for the defending champion Hedgehunter so twenty year old Niall Madden in his first season as a professional took the ride. Hunted on the first circuit he made relentless progress after the seventeenth and found himself in the leading six after second Bechers. Unlike Hedgehunter he acted on the soft ground and was also in receipt of eighteen pounds so it was not surprising that he had the edge after the last and went on to win by six lengths. He had the honour of being the first National winner to be led into the new winners enclosure although he did seem to take the most circuitous route to get there. He was taken round the back of the new weighing room complex (via Bootle it seemed !). The rest if his career is decribed above.

PUNTAL (FR) (1996) b g Bering - Saveur (Ardross) - Won 6 hurdles and 5 chases between 200 & 2005. Didn`t win in his native France. Finished unplaced on his UK debut at 2002 National meeting but then struck up an amazing sequence of four victories at four different track in the space of twenty two days in May. His National appearance in 2004 raised a few eyebrows as he was still only six and was yet to race over a distance of more than two miles five furlongs. Whilst he had won four novice events, on his last start he unseated when a 50-1 shot in the Arkle Trophy at the Festival. The Arkle is not normally considered to be a National trial and there were some of us that seriously questioned his participation. However, he didn`t do too bad, in fact he did pretty well. Attacking the fences he was amongst the leaders throughout the first circuit and was still full of running when he made a mistake at the nineteenth and shot his rider out of the saddle. Proving this was no fluke he ended his season with a 25-1 victory in the Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown. Suffered tendon problems thereafter which kept him off the track for sixteen months. His comeback race was the 2006 National and he completed the course in sixth place. The following year en-route to Aintree he was unplaced at 100-1 in the King George but to his credit he got round in the 2007 National this time in eighth place. He later raced over Cheltenhams cross country course at the 2009 Festival on what was his last appearance.

ROYAL AUCLAIR (FR) (1997) ch g  Garde Royale - Carmonera (Carmont) - Won 3 hurdles and 7 chases between 2000 & 2009. A fine servant to connections and ran in the colours that would be made famous by Kauto Star. This one was pretty good himself and was a decent handicap chaser. Won twice at Enghien in France and won on his debut in February 2001 for Martin Pipe who initially trained him before owner Clive Smith moved his horses to Paul Nicholls in 2003. Fell on his chase debut but won his next three starts including the Cathcart Chase at the 2002 Festival providing Tony McCoy with his first winner in what had been an extremely traumatic meeting. Found wins hard to come by thereafter and didn`t win again for over two years before he landed the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton. Thereafter finished third in a Hennessy and fourth in the Gold Cup when he beat several tired horses in the closing stages. He followed that with his fine second place fifteen lengths behind Hedgehunter in the 2005 National although he never looked at any stage like winning.  After those two fine performances he blotted his copy book by falling at the very first fence in the Betfred Gold Cup and the following year fell at the first in the National as well. He also finished ninth in that years Gold Cup. He came down at Valentines in 2007 and the following year finished a close second behind Monkerhostin in the Bet 365 Gold Cup at the age off eleven. He later won a point to point in 2010 (three starts between the flags) and was last seen under rules in a hunter chase at Huntingdon in May 2009

SONEVAFUSHI (1998) b g - '/Won 2 hurdles & 6 chases between 2002 & 2010. Prolific pointer winning fourteen times between 2008 and February 2014 when he raced for the final time at the venerable age os sixteen. Interestingly his last four races under rules were in the 2007 National where he pulled up in the closing stages and the next three consecutive Foxhunters (best placing fourth in 2008). Ridden in these races by the Greenall brothers Tom, Ollie and Jake.

THE OUTLIER (1998) gr g  Roselier - Shuil A Cuig (Quayside) (2007) - Won 4 chases between 2004 & 2009. Won 2007 Peter March Chase beating several useful sorts but then flopped on his next two starts so was unfancied when he made his one visit to Aintree. Up with the leaders on the first circuit he was dropping back when he unseated at the nineteenth. Pulled up in  the Irish Grand National a year later. He was eventually sold to Gordon Elliott run in Irish point-to-points running until 2011 without success.

THISTHATANDTOTHER(IRE) (1996) b g Bob Back - Baden (Furry Glen) - Won a NH flat race, 3 hurdles and 6 chases between 2001 & 2008. Won Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle (run that year at Wincanton where he won five times) as a novice in 2003 and finished fifth in the Supreme Novices Hurdle. Rounded up a successful campaign with a second place in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. Even better as a novice chaser although he only got as far as the second fence when favourite for the Arkle Chase. Thereafter found wins harder to come by finishing second in his next five starts before overhauling the ever popular Fondmort in the inaugural running of the Racing Post Plate at the Festival in 2005 (the new highlight of the additional fourth day at the Festival). Continued running in the highest company but was without a win when he lined up at ridiculously long odds of 50-1 in 2007. He nearly got round too but he was weakening when he hit the second last fence and his rider didn`t ask him to tackle the last. Thereafter ran with great success between the flags winning ten of his nineteen starts between 2009 & 2011. He also won a hunter chase at Fontwell in 2008 and finished fifth in the 2008 Foxhunters which turned out to be his last start over rules.

TIKRAM (1997) ch g Lycius - Black Fighter (Secretariat) (2007) - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 2000 & 2010. His Aintree experience was brief (he unseated at the first on his one visit in 2007) but he was a useful handicap chaser on park courses winning the 2004 Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup at the Festival. Not many National runners grace Royal Ascot but he did running in the  2006 Ascot Stakes and he also lined up in the 2003 Cesarewich.  As well as all that he won his only point-to-point.

2008 - Comply or Die

Comply or DIe.jpg

The winner

As with so many recent National winners Comply or Die never entered the winners enclosure again. Indeed he only managed one more place which was in the 2009 National when having led between the final two fences he was overtaken and finished second to Mon Mome. He was unplaced in  2010 and was pulled up in 2011 in what was his final race. He spent his retirement with Timmy Murphy competing in dressage events. He died in May 2016

Leading Fancies

Three of the four market leaders were Aintree debutants. BUTLERS CABIN was in sparkling form last season winning the four mile National Hunt Chase at the Festival and the Irish Grand National. He had not reproduced that form this year but was the choice of the champ so was one of the favourites. Once again we had joint favourites, CLOUDY LANE had won Kim Muir last season but unseated when fancied for the Irish Grand National. In excellent form this year running up a hat-trick of wins culminating in the valuable Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster.  COMPLY OR DIE was the other joint favourite. He was in good heart after an absence of almost two years finishing second behind Cloudy Lane at Doncaster before winning the Eider Chase at Newcastle. He jumped and he would certainly stay. Veteran and former winner HEDGEHUNTER would be running in his fifth National. Finished ninth last year having been hampered at both second Bechers and the Canal Turn. Running over fences this season and had run an encouraging second in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on his last start. SLIM PICKINGS had run the race of his life last year. Despite hitting the last he was only beaten two lengths into third place. Running satisfactory this year another big race was on the cards. SIMON had been fancied for this last year but fell at second Valentines when still prominent, too early to say how he would have fared had he stood up. He had not won this year and had finished fourth on his attempt to win a second Racing Post Chase on his last start.  SNOWY MORNING was another in a strong Irish challenge, he had been a top novice chaser last year chasing home Denman in the RSA Chase (with Chelsea Harbour behind). He had fallen in the Hennessy this season but had notched up two wins over hurdles and a third in a Grade 1 Chase at Leopardstown in February. Sound prospects. BEWLEYS BERRY had appeared to be cantering when he was caught out at second Bechers last year. This season he had finished second in the Becher Chase for the second year running but ran poorly at Haydock last time out. MR POINTMENT had beaten Bewleys Berry in the Becher Chase and was very lightly raced. This would be only his seventh start over fences. He had disappointed last time but reportedly broke a blood vessal. Two others that caught the attention were HI CLOY a top class Irish challenger and no stranger to Aintree over the Mildmay course winning 2006 Melling Chase. Returned to winning ways at Thurles in January. He had an obvious chance if he took to the fences. KNOWHERE  had unseated at first Canal Turn last year but was in much better form this season winning twice at Cheltenham including the valuable Cotswold Chase where he beat the very useful Our Vic. Outclassed in the Gold Cup though on his last start. Another very competitive renewal.

The Class of 2008

ARDAGHEY (IRE) (1999) b/br g Lord America - Mirs Pepper (Lancastrian) - Won one NH flat race, a hurdle and 3 chases between 2004 & 2008. Having won his only start in an Irish point-to-point he won on his UK debut at Uttoxeter. Won twice at Cheltenhams October meeting in 2006 & 2007 but also had the dubious distinction of falling & unseating in two races on two consecutive days at the 2006 Festival (RSA Chase & National Hunt Chase). Just sneaked into the 2008 National as first reserve and didn`t get very far. Last raced at Chepstow in December 2008

home, pulled up twice and unseated the last three. Not surprisingly he was not seen out in 2015.

BACKBEAT (IRE) (1997) - ch g Bob Back - Pinata (Deep Run) - Won 1 hurdle and 3 chases between 2001 & 2008. Modest hurdler but better chaser winning two novice events at Exeter in 2004. Pulled up in the RSA Chase of 2005 and was very lightly raced thereafter although he did win a small race at Sandown in 2008. Didn`t get very far in the National and sadly broke a leg on the flat in a hurdle race at Mussleburgh on 8th December 2008 and had to be put down.

BAILY BREEZE (IRE) (1999) b g  Zaffaran - MIxed Blends (The Parson) - Won 2 hurdles and 3 chases between 2003 & 2010. Finished eighth in the 2008 National (always in rear but stayed on past tired horses on what was his only ever start in the UK. Later raced twice over the banks course at Punchestown. Last raced in May 2010.

BEWLEYS BERRY (IRE) (1998) ch g  Shernazar - Approach the Dawn (Orchestra) - Won a NH flat race, 2 hurdles and a chase between 2004 & 2008. After winning three Irish point-to-points in a row he won his only NH flat race on his UK debut, his first hurdle and then his first chase at Wetherby in November 2005. Surprisingly he never won another race but became something of an Aintree specialist finishing runner up in the 2006 and 2007 Becher Chases. In the 2008 National he was leading and absolutely cruising when he crumpled on landing at second Bechers and a year later was leading three out before running out of steam to finish sixth. Another attempt on the National looked inevitable but sadly on his next start he suffered career ending tendon injuries when breaking down in the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown.

BILLYVODDAN (IRE) (1999) b g Accordian - Derryclare (Pollerton) - Won 4 chases and 2 hurdles between 2003 & 2012. Didn`t show much until was transformed by blinkers when landing the valuable Silver Cup at Ascot in 2006 and then finished just three quarter lengths down in third place in a blanket finish for the Ryanair Chase at the Festival. Clearly didn`t like Aintree as he ran poorly both in the National and when he returned for the 2009 Topham, pulling up both times. Was a much better point-to-pointer winning nine of his eighteen starts between 2011 & 2013.

BUTLER`S CABIN (FR) (2000) b g Poliglote - Strictly Cool (Bering) - Won 5 chases between 2004 & 2009. Sprung a 33-1 shock when lifting the National Hunt Chase in 2007 and in his following race he landed the Irish Grand National . Never won again but on the back of that success he was A P McCoys chosen mount for both 2008 and 2009 Nationals. In 2005 McCoy had been carried out at second Bechers by two loose horses when leading on Clan Royal and on the approach to the brook second time in 2008 he must have been feeling confident as this horse was travelling very well. A few seconds later though McCoy was picking himself up off the floor, Bechers claiming him once again. Despite showing little in four starts the following season he started favourite in 2009 but was never travelling as well and a mistake five out didn`t help his cause and he struggled home. To makes matters worse he collapsed moments after crossing the finishing line. He had needed oxygen after races before and after a spell on the sidelines it was decided by connections that he had done enough and he was retired at the relatively early age of nine.

CONTRABAND (1998) b g  Red Ransom - Shortfall (Last Tycoon) - Won 2 chases and 4 hurdles between 2003-2009. Winner on the flat at Ascot and York he hit the headlines with a win in the 2005 Arkle Trophy for original owner David Johnson and looked to have a glittering future. What went wrong ? After the Arkle he showed nothing and within three years he was lining up in the Champion Hurdle running in the colours of Fergus Wilson and starting at 250-1. Not surprisingly he finished tailed off and two days later pitched up at 200-1 in Denmans Gold Cup pulling up. Bearing in mind the Gold Cup had been his only chase start in two years it was slightly surprising to see him line up in the Grand National where he lasted ten fences before being hampered. He later ran without success in point-to-points. A bizarre career !

D`ARGENT (IRE) (1997) gr g Roselier - Money Galore (Monksfield) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 2001 & 2009. Loved Warwick winning his first three novice chases there and. in 2008 in what was the highlight of his career lifted the Classic Chase. In 2006 he chased home Baron Windrush in the Midlands National. I thought he was a certainty for the 2008 National and he gave me a good run for my money as he was up with the leaders throughout but was clearly struggling and tiring when he unseated four from home. Finished unplaced in the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown on his next start. A distant third place in the Peter Marsh Chase was the only trace of form he showed the following season and he was retired after a lacklustre display at Cheltenham in April 2009. Re-appeared in February 2011 when he pulled up on his sole outing between the flags at Barbury Castle

DARKNESS (1999) ch g (2008) Accordian - Winnowing (Strong Gale) - Won NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 2004-12. Undoubtably talented he won the 2005 Feltham Novices Chase and finished third in the Sun Alliance Chase before pulling up in the Scottish National. Off the course for two years with tendon trouble when he reappeared the National was the aim. He pulled up in the Welsh National but won at Sandown and completed the course at Aintree. A trip to the Czech Republic to contest the Velka Pardubicka was also on the cards but in the end he didn`t make the long trip east. His leg problems returned and he was very lightly raced thereafter in hunter chases.

DUN DOIRE (IRE) (1999) b g Leading Counsel - Yes Boss (Carlingford Castle) - Won 2 hurdles and 7 chases between 2004 & 2010. Won six chases on the bounce culminating with victory in the 2006 William Hill Trophy at the Festival. Sent off 7-2 favourite for that years Irish Grand National but could only finish seventh. Aintree was not a happy place for him. He took a heavy fall at the Chair in the 2006 Becher Chase and sulked around in rear clearly hating the place in the 2007 National pulling up four fences out. I was staggered to see him line up again in 2008 and again he sculked around in rear and was again pulled up. Ended his career as he started it running in Irish point-to-points. He won two in January 2010. Last seen out in a hunter chase at Punchestown in April 2010.

HEDGEHUNTER (IRE) (1996) b g Montelimar - Aberedw (Carewent) - Won a hurdle and 4 chases between 2001 & 2008. By the time he lined up at Aintree for the first time in 2004 he had only won a hurdle and two chases in Ireland but the latter was the valuable Thyestes Chase on his prep race. He had also finished fourth in a Hennessy Gold Cup and finished an albeit distant third in the Welsh National beaten twenty three lengths by Bindaree. Starting at 11-1 he put up an exuberant bold display of jumping. Always with the leaders he hit the front at the tenth and stayed there until two out and by the last fence, exhausted he fell for the only time in his career. He lay winded on the turf for several minutes with his crestfallen jockey David Casey forlornly looking on. The following year with all eyes set firmly on another tilt at the National he followed the path so often taken by Irish National winners and ran mostly over hurdles in order to protect his handicap mark. He showed very little so was allocated exactly the same weight for the 2005 renewal. One run over fences preceded his second National attempt where he started 7-1 favourite and ridden with a little more restraint by Ruby Walsh he put in a faultless display. Walsh briefly lost an iron at the twenty first but, after Clan Royal has been sensationally carried out at second Bechers, he found himself left in the lead and he stayed there, drawing away to win by fourteen lengths. He has the honour of being the last National winner to be led into the old covered winners enclosure. He never won again and to be honest being burdened with top weight of eleven stone twelve he was never going to win back to back Nationals especially with the rain soften ground underfoot . In 2006 he ran magnificently in defeat to Numbersixvalverde. Prior to that he had finished second in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to War of Attrition, a superb performance even if it was by modern day standards a weak renewal. He was lightly raced thereafter but still ran in two more Nationals finishing ninth in 2007 and thirteenth in 2008 in what was to be his final race. His performance in the Gold Cup made him achieve the highest rating of a National winner for the decade and he also has the honour of being my favourite National runner of the noughties.

HI CLOY (IRE) (1997) b g Be My Native - Thomastown Girl (Tekoah) - Won 2 hurdles and 8 chases between 2002 & 2010. Beat future Gold Cup and King George winner Kicking King in the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in 2004 and was at his best during the 2005-06 season winning two Irish grade 1 chases, the John Durkan Punchestown Chase and the Paddy Power Dial-a-bet Chase at Leopardstown . He also landed a competitive Melling Chase at Aintree. Not so good the following season failing to win and he managed just one win in 2007-08 but that was the Grade 3 Kinloch Brae Chase (finished tailed off last in 2007 King George behind Kicking King). He had been entered before in the National but he never took his chance until 2008 when he got round but didn`t stay finishing eleventh. He later won a point to point and last raced at Punchestown in April 2010.

IRON MAN (FR) (2001) ch g Video Rock - Key Figure (Fast Topaze) - Won 2 hurdles and 5 chases between 2004 & 2012. On his first start over the National fences, the 2007 Topham he unseated at the first fence. Got further in the Becher Chase coming down at Bechers and unseated at the second in the National. Finally completed the course when a distant third in the 2008 Grand Sefton Chase and pulled up in the 2009 Topham.  Pulled up at odds of 100-1 in Denmans Gold Cup of 2008. Last raced over the Mildmay course in June 2012.

JOAACI (IRE) (2000)  b g Presenting - Miss Sarajevo (Brush Aside) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 2005 & 2013. Won his first two chases but after a season over the larger obstacles reverted back to hurdles winning his first two hurdles and lined up in a novice event at the 2007 Festival. Bizarrely he reverted back to fences in his next start, pulling up in the Scottish National. Didn`t show a great deal over fences thereafter and fell in 2008 National. Was a better point-to-pointer later in his career wining five times times between 2010 and 2014 (aged 14 when he won on his final appearance at Waderidge) and also won a hunter chase at Newbury in 2010. Fell at the first in that years Foxhunters at Aintree.

McKELVEY (IRE) (1999) b g Anshan - Chatty Actress (Le Bavard) - Won 3 hurdles and 3 chases between 2004 & 2008. Fell in both his Irish point to point starts but won his first two starts over hurdles at Newcastle and Ludlow and his first chase at Sedgefield. Pulled up in the 2005 Welsh National when fancied but it was only his sixth start over fences and he fared much better when partnered by A P McCoy to land the valuable Summer National at Uttoxeter in July 2006. Unfancied at 33-1 on his first start over the National fences, the 2006 Becher Chase he was finishing the fastest at the end but was still only sixth behind Eurotrek. It was a similar story in the 2007 National. After winning his next outing over hurdles he was more fancied for the National starting at 12-1 and he absolutely flew at the finish only narrowly failing to catch Silver Birch in the dying strides. Bearing in mind he had not had a trouble free run (hampered approaching the Melling Road and at second Bechers) and had broken down with a tendon injury it was a remarkable performance. Off the course for nearly a year he made a quicker than expected recovery and after two spells over hurdles he took his place in the 2008 renewal. He had been adopted by BBC One's "One Show" and had featured prominently in their build-up to the race. A web-cam had even been installed in his stable so viewers could, if they wanted, watch him in his box twenty four/seven. Sadly the story did not have a happy ending. He was still in rear when he landed awkwardly at the twentieth fence and unseated Tom O`Brien.  Unscathed, he continued riderless but after jumping the twenty first fence he ran into the running rails suffering spinal injuries which necessitated his destruction. He was the third horse in as many years to meet his end whilst running loose and as a result the Aintree authorities widened the course to allow running off areas on all fences (up until then it was only possible to run out at the thirteenth, fourteenth, the Chair and the water). These new areas allowed loose horses to run out and also enabled fences to be by-passed. Quite a legacy. Had we not had them in 2011 god knows how the race would have panned out.

MILAN DEUX MILLE (FR) (2002) b g Double Bed - Urebaba (Garde Royale) - Won NH Flat race and 4 chase between 2005 & 2011. Won four chases between January & February 2007 and despite his tender years he was entered for the Topham Chase where he ran superbly to finish fifth. Just six when he lined up in the National in 2008 and for a circuit he ran well making the running before weakening so rapidly that he was tailed off by Bechers. He was so far behind that he really should have been pulled up but continued miles behind the others. He suffered a similar fate in the following years Topham finishing even further behind a staggering two hundred and thirty three lengths behind the winner (a hundred more than he had been behind in the National). Reappeared two years later in a hurdle at Fontwell in January 2011  where he was hopelessly tailed off after seven flights and was pulled up.

MR POINTMENT (IRE) (1999) b g Old Vic - Bettyhill (Ardross) - Won NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 2 chases between 2004 & 2010. Fifth behind Niconour and Denman in 2006 RSA Novices Hurdle. He won on his debut over fences at Bangor in 2006 and a year later won his second and final chase when landing the Becher Chase on what was only his sixth start over fences. He took the lead at the third fence and stayed there. Fancied for the 2008 National he led from the sixteenth fence to the second Canal Turn. He weakened rapidly and pulled up before the last fence. Later that year he finished a very very tired second in the Becher Chase stopping almost to a walk at the elbow before he managed to raise a final trot to keep the runners up spot. Showed nothing thereafter and now running in the colours of the Wilson family he appeared at odds of 250-1 in the 2010 Gold Cup. He was declared for the 2010 National but was taken out at the last minute to allow his more fancied stable companion Cerium to get into the race. Last seen uner rules finishing a distant last in the Durham National at Sedgefield in April 2010 but did run in three point to points in 2011.

NADOVER (FR) (2001) b g  Cyborg - Djerissa (Highlander) - Won a hurdle and 4 chases between 2004 & 2012. Won on his sole outing on the flat in the French provinces and won a hurdle there as well. In the UK he won a couple of novice chases in 2005-06 and won the same race two years running on Welsh National day at Chepstow in 2006 & 2007. Unconsidered at 1251- in the 2008 National he was never a factor but came home in his own time in seventh place. He was next aimed at the Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Repulic and he was my idea of the winner but burdened with my tip he seemed unsuited to the course and after blundering at one of the big water jumps he was pulled up. He did put up a good performance over the Cheltenham cross country course behind course specialist Garde Champetre in December 2008. He ran in points wthout successs and was last seen toiling in a hunter chase at Carlisle in March 2012.

NAUNTON BROOK (1990) b g  Alderbrook - Give me an Answer (True Song) - Won a hurdle and 6 chases between 2003 & 2010. Won on hurdling debut at Warwick in March 2004 and on his chase debut at Worcester the following October. Finished fifth in the 2006 Welsh National and went one better a year later. His two Nationals were races of contrast. In 2007 he hit the front at first Bechers and built up a commanding lead as he led the field back onto the racecourse first time. The following year he was tailed of last at the same point. He pulled up both times. He was last seen under rules in February 2010 at Warwick but he later went on to win four points and was only twice out of the frame in nine starts between 2011 & 2012.

NO FULL (FR) (2001) b g Useful - Rosey Junior (Labus) - Won a hurdle and 2 chases between 2005 & 2009. Won a small race at Auteuil in June 2005 on what was his last start in France and was trained for a while by Paul Webber in the UK for whom he won once, at Haydock in February 2006. He then moved to Ireland to be trained by Thomas Foley, showed some form but was unconsidered at 125-1 for the 2008 National. He actually led over the first fence but he was in rear when he fell at first Bechers. Raced mostly over hurdles thereafter and did win at Listowel. He was a killed in February 2010 on his point-to-point debut.

PHILSON RUN (IRE) (1996) b g Un Desperardo - Isis (Deep Run) - Won 4 chases between 2004 & 2010. Competed in Irish point to points and did not race under rules until he was eight when he won a hunter chase at Haydock. He was lightly raced thereafter but did win the 2005 Midlands National on what was only is fourth start under rules and finished seventh in the Scottish National. Won the Eider Chase the following season but pulled up in the Midlands National and finished a distant sixth in the Scottish National. Had an inauspicious introduction to the National fences falling at the first in the Becher Chase and was an unconsidered 100-1 shot in the 2007 National but he stayed on to finish a distant fourth. The following year he unseated at the first Canal Turn. He last ran at Aintree when he finished a distant seventh in the Becher Chase and later ran over the cross country course at  Cheltenham. Last seen at Cheltenham in April 2010.

POINT BARROW (IRE) (1998) b g  Arctic Lord - Credit Transfer (Kemal) - Won a NH flat race, a hurdle and 5 chases between 2003 & 2009. Highly tried in his first season over fences having won three chases in a row at Fairyhouse, Naas and Navan. He finished fifth in the National Hunt Chase and finished unplaced in the Irish National in 2005. The following season showed very little until he sprang a 20-1 surprise by landing the Irish Grand National having taken the lead four out and being pushed clear. Won the Leopardstown Chase in 2007 and was a co-favourite for the National. On Grand National day I sat down with my Racing Post opened at "Ten Year Trends" (a yearly National ritual in my house) and we whittled the forty strong field down to this sure-fire winner. He fell at the first fence. His form deserted him  in 2008 and he was pulled up at half way when he returned for the National. He last ran a Punchestown in May 2009.

SIMON (1999) b g Overbury - Gaye Memory (Buckskin) - Won a hurdle and 5 chases between 2004 & 2009. Won his sole Irish point to point and won his debut over hurdles but failed to win in six further starts over timber before he was sold to race in the UK. Ran in the colours of the legendary Mercy Rimell, widow of Fred who trained four National winners. An astute judge of jumpers herself she took over the reigns upon her husbands death and saddled several National runners in her own right. He finished sixth in the Welsh National but won the Great Yorkshire Chase (run that year at Southwell) and landed the Racing Post Chase at Kempton. Held solid each way claims for the 2007 National and was still travelling strongly when he fell at second Valentines. Many thought he was looking a likely winner but it was too far out to know for sure. On the basis of that run he was even more fancied the following year despite not managing a win all season and he was travelling well again when he unseated at the very same fence. Showed nothing for the remainder of his career and was actually pulled up in each of his last four races the last of which was at Chepstow in December 2009. Ran in one point to point in 2010 and one in 2011.

SLIM PICKINGS (IRE) (1999) b g Scribiano - Adapan (Pritpan) - Won a NH flat race, hurdle and 2 chases between 2004 & 2008.Unconsidered at 33-1 in 2007 with just two wins to his name (although he had run well in handicaps in Ireland and finished fifth in a Racing Post Chase) but was a revelation at AIntree. Prominent throughout he moved into the lead at the twenty sixth fence until the last when he was awkward and failed to hold off the winner Silver Birch and the fast finishing McElvey. He was only beaten two lengths into third place. Was further behind in fourth place a year later. His last raced proved to be the 2008 Lexus Chase when he was out of his depth and he finished tailed off. Not Gold Cup class clearly but he would have been fancied to make it third time lucky in the 2009 National. Sadly he didn`t make it to Aintree this time as he broke a hind leg on the gallops in January 2009 and he had to be put down.

TUMBLING DICE (IRE) (1999)  b g Kings Theatre - Eva Fay (Fayaz) - Won 4 hurdles & 3 chases between 2002 & 2009. Better hurdler than chaser finishing placed in the 2005 Coral Cup and Liverpool Hurdle. Disappeared early in the 2008 National. Last seen out at Cork in June 2009. Ran in points in the east of england between 2010-12 but didn't win in seven starts.

TURKO (2002) gr g Turgeon - Cambaria (Nice Havrais) - Won 3 hurdles and 6 chases between 2005 & 2012. Won at Clairefontaine in France on his second start over jumps and in November 2005 won on his UK debut at Newbury. Finished sixth in the Triumph Hurdle and fifth in the Anniversary Hurdle at Aintree in 2006. Switched to fences early and won on his debut at Aintrees October meeting. Ran in 2008 National at the young age of six having won at Sandown and finished second in the Irish Hennessy and third in Festival Plate at Cheltenham. In the National he took a heavy fall at second Valentines. Didn`t  repeat that form the following year and after pulling up in the handicap chase before the 2009 National his career in handicaps was over. Later became a useful hunter chaser though winning twice at Newbury. Fell in the 2011 Foxhunters. His career ended when he refused to race in a Ladies Open at Barbury Castle in December 2012

VODKA BLEU (FR) (1999) b g Pistolet Bleu - Viva Vodka (Crystal Glitters) - Won a NH flat race, 2 hurdles and 7 chases between 2003 & 2008. Won a NH flat race in Ireland before being sold out of Eddie Hales yard and won his debut for Martin Pipe before being hampered and unseating in Martell Champion Bumper on Grand National day 2003. Not so good over hurdles but not out of the first three in first nine starts over fences ending up with a second to Exotic Dancer in 2006 Paddy Power Gold Cup. In his next race he pulled up in the Hennessy. Later that season made mistakes, got hampered and was tailed off in the 2007 Topham so it was a little surprising to see him try his luck at Aintree again in 2008 National. To be fair he had won the valuable Silver Cup at Ascot`s December meeting and also won at Cheltenham in the new year so he was in fine form.  In the National he ran hopelessly and was pulled up.  Failed in his next start at Cheltenham and finished tailed off last in the Bet 356 Gold Cup at Sandown at the end of the season. He and only raced one more time when again getting tailed off and puling up in the Paddy Power. The spark had clearly gone and he was retired at the relatively early age of nine.
