1990 - Mr Frisk

Mr Frisk.jpg

The winner

Three weeks after his Aintree triumph Mr Frisk beat Durham Edition again with a pillar to post victory in the Whitbread Gold Cup becoming the first horse to win both races. If anything this, rather than the National, was his finest hour. He returned to Aintree in 1991 on ground that was not to his liking. It was a sporting gesture to attempt to retain his crown but he was not expected to win, starting at 25-1 and although prominent early on he was struggling by Bechers second time and was pulled up. He won his fourth Punch Bowl Chase at Ascot in 1991 and finished fourth again in the 1992 Kim Muir. Aintree was off the agenda this year and he last raced in the Whitbread finishing seventh. He enjoyed his retirement as an eventer with his trainers wife. He injured a hind leg on the road in September 2000 and had to be put down.

Leading Fancies

Those at Aintree and those watching proceedings on TV would notice major changes to the racecourse and to some of the fences. The authorities had resisted calls for change, especially to Bechers Brook after the death of the popular grey Dark Ivy in 1987. Faced though with mounting criticism after the deaths of Brown Trix and Seaanden at the Brook in 1989 change became inevitable. In October 1989 work started on alterations to Bechers. The brook was raised by thirty inches and the stream was filled in. The landing side was widened to prevent the horses having to turn immediately after clearing the fence. Minor alterations were also made to the landing side of Valentines and the tenth fence. In addition the Mildmay course had been restructured removing the sharp bend at the entrance to the home straight. Deviations in the home straight that had been necessary to allow the Mildmay course to encompass the water jump were also removed. From now on the water jump would only be jumped as part of the National course. The changes especially to the National course appeared to be having the designed effect with a record twenty two of the thirty strong field completing the course in the Topham and whilst the Foxhunters saw more grief there had been no fallers in either race at the new modified Bechers.

In the National with two last minute withdrawals due to the fast state of the ground thirty eight lined up. Favourite was the David Nicholson trained BIGSUN who had won the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival where he had broken the course record. He would also stay as he had won the four miler at Cheltenhams New Year fixture as well. He was to be partnered by Richard Dunwoody who was having his sixth ride in the race but the first on a horse other than West Tip. Next best was another Aintree debutant BROWN WINDSOR, a top of the ground specialist he had won the 1989 Whitbread Gold Cup in the dying strides when still a novice and this year had won the Cathcart Cup at the Festival. The ground would also favour old favourite DURHAM EDITION runner up in 1988 and fifth last year. He had won twice at Wetherby this season including the valuable Rowland Meyrick Chase and had run well in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup behind GHOFAR. That race was an ineresting pointer as it was also run on firm ground and the order had been GHOFAR, BROWN WINDSOR, MR FRISK and DURHAM EDITION with just over seven lengths separating them. MR FRISK was a bold front runner who loved to hear his hooves rattle. His American owner was nervous about a National challenge and insisted he be pulled out the year before when the conditions were heavy. He was particularly effective in the autumn and he now had conditions that were ideal for him. BONANZA BOY on the other had would hate the firm ground but still was popular in the market. He had added a second Welsh National this year but hadn’t shown much again in the Gold Cup. CALL COLLECT acted on any ground and had won an admittedly poor Aintree Foxhunters in 1989 on heavy ground and an ultra competitive Cheltenham Foxhunters on his last start on good ground. The most interesting runner was the American UNCLE MERLIN who, like previous US winners, Jay Trump and Ben Nevis was a champion over timber. He had won the Maryland Hunt Cup. In his one season in the UK he had won a chase at Wincanton and unlike many foreign entries had run a sufficient number of times in the UK to get a handicap mark. He was very well treated on 10-0. Continuing the international flavour was the presence of Spanish amateur Jose Simo who was given special dispensation to ride in the race on the outsider GALLIC PRINCE. It would also be interesting to see how WEST TIP would fare. The 1986 hero now in his sixth National had finished placed in the Cheltenham Foxhunters and for the first time would not have Richard Dunwoody on board. Peter Hobbs did the honours this time.

MORE DETAILED HORSE BIOGRAPHIES WERE INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL NINETIES AND NOUGHTIES NATIONAL SITES AND DUE TO THE WORK PUT IN I HAVE ADDED THEM TO THIS SITE AND WILL INCLUDE THIS FEATURE FOR ALL NATIONALS FROM 1990 ONWARDS - EACH YEARS CLASS WILL CONTAIN THE HORSES FOR WHOM THIS WAS EITHER THEIR ONLY NATIONAL OR THEIR LAST NATIONAL

AGAINST THE GRAIN (1981) b g Oats - Bench Game (Kings Bench) - Won 5 chases and a hurdle between 1984 & 1992. Winner on the flat. Placed three times at the Cheltenham Festival, twice at long odds (40-1 third in 1985 Triumph Hurdle and third at 50-1 in 1986 Stayers). Was a much better chaser, winning three times in 1986-87, finishing fourth in the Sun Alliance Chase and winning the Mildmay Chase at Aintree beating a competitive field that included future Gold Cup favourite Playchool and future National winner Mr Frisk. Was not so good thereafter although did pick up small races at Wolverhampton and Nottingham later in his career.  Missed 1991-92 and was last seen out at Nottingham in January 1992

BARTRES (1979) ch g Le Bavard (FR) - Gail Borden (Blue Chariot) - Won 2 NHFs, 3 hurdles & 3 chases between 1983 & 1993. Enjoyed a long career first in Ireland where he won a valuable novice chase at the Fairyhouse Grand National meeting in 1986 and in the UK with David Murray Smith. Became something of an Aintree specialist competing in two Nationals (finishing a never dangerous eighth in 1990) and in later years he ran an excellent race to finish sixth in the 1992 Foxhunters (he completed down the field a year later). Last seen under rules in a Fakenham hunter chase in May 1993 but he later turned up again in point to points in 1995 at the age of sixteen.

BOB TISDALL (1979) ch g Deep Run - Amphibian (Zarthustra) - Won NHF, 3 hurdles & 3 chases between 1983 & 1993. Will be remembered for his antics in the 1989 National. Ridden by replacement rider John White (his original partner Philip Fenton had been ruled out after injuring his neck in a fall at the Chair in the Topham) they broke the tape causing a false start and when the starter let them go at the second time of asking he was stood sideways and virtually refused to race. Once he did get going the field were almost the first fence and after jumping the first he refused at the second. It was the first time White had failed to complete the course. He started life in Ireland and was twice placed at the Cheltenham Festival finishing fourth in the Supreme Novices Hurdle in 1984 and runner up in the RSA Chase in 1988. His novice chase year was his best as he won three of his first four starts and whilst he never won thereafter he ran several good races. He completed the 1990 National a distant last of twenty two finishers and thereafter whilst his jumping often let him down he competed in two Foxhunters finishing fifth in 1993 on what was his final start

CALL COLLECT (1981) ch g Ballymore - Regal Bell (Princeley Gift (1990) - Won 5 chases between 1986 & 1994. Won on the flat as a three year old in Ireland but was very lightly raced early in his career and when he finished third in the 1989 Cheltenham Foxhunters it was only his third start under rules. He then won a novices hunter chase at Haydock and put in a superb performance for one so inexperienced to land the Aintree Foxhunters. True it was not a strong renewal but he beat the highly regarded hunter Border Burg comfortably. The following season he established himself as the top hunter chaser in the land and managed the Aintree/Cheltenham Foxhunters double when beating a good quality field at Cheltenham that included previous National hero West Tip. He had been in the limelight for just over two years but then he disappeared first to Ireland where he ran a handful of times without success and then back to the UK. He last ran under rules when pulling up in a Kelso hunter chase in February 1994 and it was very sad to see him pull up in all three of his points in 1995.

CHARTER HARDWARE (1982) b g Hardboy - Unsinkable Sarah (Mon Capitaine) - Won NH flat race, hurdle and 3 chases between 1986 & 1990. Fairly useful chaser who never fell in his career. Finished runner up in 1989 Kim Muir at the Festival and chased home Roll-A-Joint in heavy conditions in that years Scottish Grand National. The following year he finished eighth in the Kim Muir before his Aintree run. Providing Norman Williamson with his first National ride he finished the course but presumably suffered injuries on the firm ground as he was listed as "dead" in that years Timeform

CONCLUSIVE (1979) ch g Crash Course - French Cherry (Escart II) - Won NHF, hurdle and 7 chases between 1984 & 1990. Ran in the same colours as Hallo Dandy. Lightly raced in his early years but he enjoyed a very successful 1988-89 season wining four times although he wasn't seen out after January. When he did reappear for the following campaign he continued where he had left off with victories at Carlisle and Haydock before pulling up in the Welsh National. He fell in his prep race for the National at Kelso and his National experience was brief. That was it under rules although he did later win a point to point in 1993

COURSE HUNTER (1978) b g Crash Course - Miss Hunter (Buckhound) - Mum finished third in the 1970 National. Won hurdle and 6 chases between 1982 & 1990. Won four times during 1985-86 when trained in Ireland and won his first start for new connections at Sandown in November 1986. Was travelling well when he came down three from home in the 1987 Topham. Consistent the following season but with just the one win to show from it (Newbury in March 1988) and ran well in the National. He was still in contention when he made the most monumental blunder at second Bechers. He was down on his nose and called a faller by the BBC commentator Julian Wilson but somehow his jockey, Paul Croucher stayed in the saddle and they continued to finish a distant eighth of the nine finishers (his noseband had been knocked over his mouth). Lightly raced after his 1988 exploits the 1990 National was his last race.

GAINSAY (1979) br g Tepukel - Swift Response (No Argument) - Winner on the flat when trained in Ireland. Won 3 hurdles and 5 chases between 1982 & 1991. Very useful juvenile hurdler winning valuable three year old event at Sandown and finished fourth in the Triumph Hurdle. Didn't capitalise on that promise and so his future lay in chasing and things started well with victory on his chase debut at Kempton in November 1984. For most of his career he was pretty average save for in 1986-87 where he won four times including at both Cheltenham (National Hunt Handicap Chase) and Aintree festivals. After that season he reverted to type and din't win again. Last ran at Sandown in March 1991. Was owned by the late pop star Erroll Brown of Hot Chocolate fame.

GALA`S IMAGE (1980) br g - Gala Performance - Chilista (Tarqogan) - Won NHF race in Ireland on his only start there, 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1984 & 1994. Useful novice hurdler and his trainer had high hopes for him as a chaser but things did not initially go to plan. A faller on his first start over fences, he ran out through the wing of a fence on his second and it was not until his eighth start that he finally tasted success. Not a bad one though, he was a 25-1 winner of the Arkle Trophy at the 1987 Festival. Wins were few and far between thereafter but he did still put up some smart performances notably when second in the 1989 National Hunt Handicap Chase and his seventh place in the 1989 National when he was still in contention two out. The following year he fell at the first fence. In 1991 he won his first race in over two and half years when he won the Golden Miller Chase at Cheltenhams April fixture. He continued racing until he was fourteen where he met his end in very sad circumstances. Running in the 1994 Golden Miller Chase, his first race of the season he was tailed off when he took a fatal fall.

GALLIC PRINCE (1979) b g Kinglet - Camargue (Combat) - Won 4 chases between 1986 & 1992. Winning pointer who did not run under rules until he was eight. Won two novice hunter chases during the 1988-89 season and finished second in the National Hunt Chase at the Festival and was something of a surprise winner for one so inexperienced of the Midlands Grand National. Leased for the day in 1990 by Iberian Airlines he was partnered by a Spanish amateur who had to obtain special permission from the Jockey Club to ride in the race. He did not return to Aintree but won his only start of the 1990-91 campaign at Sandown and last saw a racecourse at Cheltenham in April 1992.

GEE-A (1979) br g Arapaho - Arctic Daisy (Arctic Slave) - Won a hurdle and 11 chases between 1983 & 1993. Will always be associated with his lady rider Gee Armytage who was for a brief moment in the mid eighties the most famous rider in the country and who really put female riders on the map. Despite popular belief he was not named after his famous rider. Only managed one win in this first seasons over fences but enjoyed a phenomenal season in 1986-87 which saw him win six chases in sixteen starts including a double at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festival, lifting the Mildmay of Fete and a handicap over the Mildmay course. In 1988 he attracted considerable publicity in his attempt at the National with Miss Armytage on the back of a couple of good second places at Cheltenham in the Mackeson Gold Cup and Cathcart at the Festival. In the National itself they were with the leaders on the first circuit and actually led briefly on the run towards Bechers second time. Sadly they weakened rapidly after the Brook and the aggravation of an old back injury meant that Armytage had to pull up after second Valentines. In 1988-89 there were three more wins including a second victory over the Mildmay fences and even a trip to Auteiil in the summer (unsuccessful he was pulled up). There was further success over hurdles and fences in 1989-90 but a second attempt on the National was a quieter affair as he was behind throughout and finished amongst the backmarkers. There was more of the same in 1990-91 but he enjoyed one more memorable day in the sun when, ridden by Mr Paul Murphy he sprung a 66-1 shock by lifting the 1992 Martell Foxhunters, He also completed the course in rear the following year as well. He last ran at Fakenham in April 1993

HUNGRY HUR (1979) ch g Prince Hansel - Fortinette (Fortina (FR)) - Won 2 NHF, 4 hurdles and 9 chases between 1984 & 1990. Very useful Irish chaser. Won valuable novice event at the 1985 Punchestown Festival but was sent chasing immediately afterwards and was very good when his jumping stood up in 1985-86 (won twice but fell/unseated twice). Liked Leopardstown and Punchestown and most of his wins came at those tracks. Flopped on his UK debut in 1988 Mildmay of Flete at the Festival and on his second visit to the UK at Aintree in the 1989 Martell Cup he was pulled up after jumping poorly. Seemed an ideal National type but was always in rear and was struggling when sadly he broke his leg on the flat after jumping the nineteenth fence.

LANAVOE (1979) b g - Tudor Rocket -  Ballincanty (Le Prince) - Won 8 chases between 1984 & 1990. Useful Irish chaser who won the same race at two consecutive Galway festivals and was rarely out of the money. The National was his first and only visit to the UK and he has the distinction of being the first faller at the new look Bechers Brook which had claimed no scalps in either the Topham or Foxhunters. No record of him running again.

LASTOFTHEBROWNIES (1980) b g - Giolla Mear - Another Rose (Trouville) - Won a NHF, a hurdle and 5 chases between 1986 & 1990. Tough Irish chaser who in a relatively short career of  four full seasons managed thirty seven starts. He lost what would have been his most important success, the Leopardstown Chase in the stewards room for going the wrong way around a marker. He only visited the UK for his three Nationals and for the 1987 RSA Chase at the Festival in 1987. He last ran at Navan in November 1990

MONANORE (1977) ch g Prefairy - Mouskouri (Will Somers) - Won a hurdle and 10 chases between 1981 and 1990. A hero of the eighties as, at the age of thirteen and running in his final race he was in the twilight of his career when he crashed out (quite liteally) at the fourteenth fence in 1990. Running in last place he swerved in mid air to avoid the fallen Gainsay and crashed through the rails. Fortunately no harm was done to horse, rider or the spectators at the fence who dived for cover. During the eighties he was a National stalwart. Having led for some of the race on debut in 1986 he faded to finish eighth. He finished tenth in 1987, a never dangerous third in 1988 and possibly his best performance came in 1989 when, close with the leaders throughout he eventually finished sixth. He was a pretty smart chaser in Ireland too, a regular in the top handicap chasers his finest hour came when he lifted the 1986 Thyestes chase at Gowran Park.

NAUTICAL JOKE (1979) b g Sea Catch - Carnival Jest (Carnival Dancer) - Won 16 chases between 1987 & 1992. Didn't see a racecourse until he was seven and only raced over hurdles once but more than made up for it when he became a chaser. Fifteen runs in his novice campaign resulted in three wins (he fell in the RSA Chase), thirteen in 1988-89 and he won five more (three at Market Rasen). Just nine in 1989-90 but two were wins, both at Newcastle. He failed to win in ten starts the following year but enjoyed a renaissance during 1991-92, thirteen starts, six wins (three more at Market Rasen) and it was at the Lincolnshire track that he bowed out in triumph in May 1992.

POLYFEMUS (1982) ch g Pollerton (IRE) - Bardigate (Bargello) - Won 4 chases between 1986 & 1991. Won Mandarin Chase at Newbury in December 1990. Was up with the pace on the first circuit of the 1990 National and survived a monumental blunder at the Chair. He dropped back thereafter and was pulled up before Valentines.  He lost his form completely the following year and sadly had to be put down after pulling up lame in at Wincanton in April 1991.

PUKKA MAJOR (USA) (1981) gr g Le Fabuleux (FR) - Pakeha (FR) (Zeddaan) - Won a hurdle, 13 chases between 1986 & 1993. When he was in the mood he was a very useful animal indeed but he gained a reputation for muleishness that blighted the end of his career.  Was at his best between 1988 & 1990. During the 1987-88 season he was only once out of the frame in nine starts which netted four wins. The following season he was even better winning four in a row culminating with victory in the Grand Annual Chase at the Festival. However by the following year he was starting to get his own ideas about the game and there were concerns about him lining up at Aintree as he had refused to start in his two races before the National. However come Grand National day he was on his best behaviour and ran really well, was prominent for much of the first circuit and he was still in contention for a place when he unseated rider four out. Thereafter it all went very very wrong and if he did consent to start he would often pull himself up mid race. By 1992-93 he was really not interested any more and he was retired after refusing at Towcester in April 1993.

ROLL-A-JOINT (1978) ch g Take A Reef - Sante (Chanter) - Won a hurdle and 9 chases between 1983 & 1990. Winning Irish pointer he was lightly raced was and not really amounting to much until he changed hands in 1989 and transformed himself in one season into the sixth winning most horse in terms or prize money won. Seven victories culminating in victory over Charter Hardware in the Scottish Grand National. The following season he did not manage to win but started the year chasing home Desert Orchid in a two horse race at Wincanton and later finished unplaced in both the Hennessy and Welsh National. He held solid each way claims on his National debut but sadly he hit the Canal first time, fell, broke his neck and was killed instantly

SIR JEST (1978) b g Sea Catch - Carnival Jest (Carnival Dancer) - Won 13 chases between 1986 & 1990. Didn't see a racecourse until he was eight but more than made up for it thereafter. Only won once in his first season but in a remarkable 1987-88 season he ran fifteen times and won eight (three times at Catterick & Sedgefield and twice at Hexham). In the National itself he refused at Valentines second time when behind. Unlucky in 1989 (he was brought down at Bechers first time) and in 1990 he made it third time lucky in finishing a never dangerous ninth. It should be noted that he never showed any ill-effects from his National exertions as after each National he competed in he won his next start. He ended his career on a winning note when wining a Stratford chase in May 1990 which incidentally was the furthest south he had ever travelled.

SOLARES (1980) br g Free State - Indian Wells (Reliance II) - Winner on the flat, won 4 hurdles & 8 chases between 1983 & 1992. Never hit the headlines in a career that was spent mostly in small races in the North but he did finish third in the 1987 Midlands National. He was pulled up in the 1988 Scottish National. He managed a hat-trick of wins in March 1989 (at Sedgefield, Kelso and Wetherby) before a second attempt at the Midlands National (he was pulled up). In the 1990 National he completed the course in rear. He last raced at Carlisle in January 1992.

STAR`S DELIGHT (1982) gr g John de Coombe - Vanity Surprise (Blakeney) - Winner on the flat and won 4 hurdles and 11 chases between 1986 & 1994.  Had been nothing more than useful when trained by Ron Hodges but took on a new lease of life when moved to Martin Pipe in 1989 winning five chases on the bounce (including three times in Haydock) mostly in small fields. Flashy grey who sadly broke a blood vessel on his one National start which forced him to pull up relatively early having been prominent. Continued his winning ways the following season and finished second in the Grand Annual at the Festival. A year later he was outclassed in the Queen Mother Champion Chase finishing a very distant last of six runners. Last saw a racecourse at Lingfield in February 1994.

THINKING CAP (1981) ch g Bargello - Grangeclare Lady (Menelek) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 1986 & 1993. His brief appearance in the 1990 National was his only appearance in the UK. He was nothing more than an average chaser in his native Ireland but he did have one memorable day in the sun when he won the valuable Troytown Chase at Navan in 1987. Last raced at Clonmel in February 1993.

TORSIDE (1979) ch g Funny Man - Annaghmore (Yrrah Jnr) - Won 6 chases between 1983 & 1992. Showed nothing over hurdles (he even once refused to race) and after winning his second chase he failed to complete the course four times. He was an average sort finishing fourth in the 1988 National Hunt Handicap Chase at he Festival and later that season he was placed in a chase over the Mildmay fences. He lined up in the 1988 Whitbread Gold Cup but was unplaced behind Desert Orchid. He didn't get very far in his one National attempt as he broke down on the approach to Bechers but he clearly did not do any lasting damage as he continued racing for two more seasons.

UNCLE MERLIN (USA) (1981) b g Easy Gallop (US) - Aunt Sheila (Mystic II) (1990) - Won 1 chase in the UK between 1989 & 1991. American chaser who won their premier timber race, the Maryland Hunt Cup in 1989. In an attempt to emulate Jay Trump and Ben Nevis he was sent to the UK in October 1989 to be trained by Tim Forster with a view of running him in the National. In an attempt to secure a handicap mark he ran five times over fences and was victorious once at Wincanton in January 1990. Looking thrown in for the National with just ten stone he was up with the first two on the first circuit and on the approach to Bechers had a clear advantage over Mr Frisk. Jumping the fence a little too steeply jockey Hywel Davies was pitched over the horses head and it was all over although he did finish riderless in third place. It was too early to say whether he would have won had he stood up but he was still going very well and he would have gone close. A second attempt remained on the table but after injuring a tendon in January 1991 he returned to the States. He fell early in the 1992 Maryland Hunt Cup.

WEST TIP (1977) b g Gala Performance - Astyl (Vulgan) - Won 2 hurdles & 10 chases between 1982 & 1991. The 1986 winner and a truly remarkable animal who was as tough as they come. Famously lost an argument with a lorry in his younger days and bore a distinctive scar on his hind quarters. A useful novice hurdler he chased home Sabin du Loir and Dawn Run at the 1983 Festival. Sent novice chasing he won twice but was disappointing in the RSA Chase before being beaten in a novice chase over the Mildmay fences, He came to prominence in the run up to the 1985 Grand National with four straight successes including the Mildmay /Cazalet Memorial at Sandown and the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival. That final win propelled him to favouritism for the National and his young jockey Richard Dunwoody came in for a lot of media attention (including an appearance on the then flagship BBC 1 talk show Wogan). They was cruising too until they hit the top of Bechers second time and got caught out by the drop. It was the first time he had fallen in his career and the only mistake he made at Aintree. He didn't manage in the run-up to his second National and was beaten in the National Hunt Handicap Chase but he again started favourite. Making amends for his slip up the year before he never put a foot wrong and won comfortably. It would be three years before he would enter the winners enclosure again but he continued being campaigned in the highest company. He ran in the next three Gold Cups and finished fourth in the next two Nationals before a remarkable performance in 1989 to get within seven lengths of the winner Little Polveir having rallied strongly on the flat. He had provided Richard Dunwoody with his first five National rides but by the time the 1990 race came along he was running in hunter chases having won at Hereford the previous season and had finished a very credible third in the Cheltenham Foxhunters on his National prep-race. Ridden this time by Peter Hobbs he was never competitive but gave his young rider safe passage - one could wish for no finer partner to be making one's National debut with. He stayed in training for one more season but did not run at Aintree. His last start was the 1991 Cheltenham Foxhunters. He competed in six Nationals more than any since Wynburgh in the fifties and sixties. It should also be noted that he was in training for nine seasons and remarkably ran at the Cheltenham Festival each time. Quite a training performance.

YOUNG DRIVER (1977) b g LInacre - Pepe (Taboun) - Won 2 hurdles and 2 chases between 1981 & 1990. Started life with Mick O'Toole in Ireland but moved to Scotland where he won two hurdles in 1981-82 before returning to O'Toole where he won two chases at Navan and the valuable PZ Mower Chase at Thurles. Finished third in 1984 National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival. He clearly was a fragile individual and he missed 1984-85 through injury and now back in Scotland when he lined up in the 1986 National he was heavily bandaged. This was his finest hour. Prominent throughout he was a clear leader two fences from home and he still held an advantage at the elbow before being overhauled by West Tip going down by just two lengths. That was it really - he sustained a serious leg injury the following season and when he did reappear in 1989 he showed nothing in three starts (pulled up in Midlands National). I have no idea what he was doing in the 1990 National as it was just his sixth start since his heroics four years previously. He was tailed off when he landed very steeply at Bechers first time and was wisely pulled up. His rider stated that had the fence not been modified he would have fallen head first into  the brook - a sign that the new modifications were a success. He did not run again.

1991 - Seagram

Seagram.jpg

The winner

A worthy winner on the day Seagram finished fourth in the Whitbread Gold Cup on his next start. Sadly thereafter his form completely deserted him and he never won another race. He ran moderately over the next two seasons which yielded two unsuccessful returns to Aintree.  He was never a factor in the 1992 National and was pulled up in the closing stages and he sulked in rear during the inaugural Becher Chase, jumping poorly until he deposited his rider at the Chair. He pulled up at Sandown in January 1993 and was then off the course for nearly two years before reappearing in the autumn of 1994 aged fourteen. Now trained by Josh Gifford he ran three times without getting competitive and was retired. He died in 1997 aged seventeen.

Leading Fancies

Conditions for the 1991 race could not have been more different with a biting cold wind and rain lashing across Aintree making the preliminaries pretty miserable especially as the runners were kept waiting by a handful of animal rights protestors who ran onto the course by the Melling Road just as the runners were about to be dispatched. Four of the first six home in 1990 lined up again although the ground had gone against MR FRISK and it was somewhat surprising to see him take his chance again. He was friendless in the market at 25-1 along with DURHAM EDITION who was also better on faster ground. Favourte was BONANZA BOY who, whilst he had failed to make it three Welsh Nationals in a row had won the Midlands National at Uttoxeter. There was very much a feeling that it could be third time lucky for this one who had disappointed in 1989 & 1990. GARRISON SAVANNAH was the first Gold Cup winner to try his luck in the National since the ill-fated Alverton in 1979. He was a dual Festival winner having landed the RSA Chase in 1990 as well as a surprising short head victory in the blue riband having been lightly campaigned (this would be only his third race of the season). Jockey Mark Pitman had endured a race against time to be fit for the ride having suffered injuries after his Gold Cup win in the County Hurdle later that day. BIGSUN had been without a win this season but had by-passed the Cheltenham Festival so would be fresh. SEAGRAM at 12-1 was not very big but was a tough sort who had in his younger days competed both over hurdles at Aintree and the Mildmay course. This year he was following a very similar path to BIGSUN the year before winning the four miler at Cheltenhams New Years Day fixture and then won the National Hunt Handicap Chase although to be honest it had not been a very strong renewal. Second season chaser and stable comapanion of Mr Frisk, DOCKLANDS EXPRESS had never finished out of the first three in seventeen starts over fences. He had won seven times and on his last outing had won the Racing Post Chase at Kempton. There was another Czech raider this year with Vaclav Chaloupka back to have another go. The mare FRAZE was arguably better than the previous Czech raider Essex as she had finished second in the past two Velka Pardubickas. However she had not run since the 1990 race and without a run in the UK was burdened with automatic top weight of twelve stone.

The class of 91

ABBA LAD (1982) ch g Le Bavard (FR) - Rosina Royal (Skyros) - Won 4 chases between 1986 & 1996. Showed little over hurdles but did win on debut over fences at Fontwell in December 1987. Was nothing more than an average staying chaser but he did hit a rich vein of form in 1988-89 winning three times and finishing a four lengths runner up behind Gallic Prince in the Midlands National. That was as good as it got. He was off the course for nearly two years and was no-where as good again and was tailed off when pulled up after a circuit in 1991. A year later and he was similarly tailed off early in a small race at Hereford on Grand National day. Reappeared four years later in a couple of hunter chases and a point at the age of fourteen.

BALLYHANE (1981) ch g Crash Course - Golden Approach (Golden Visit) - Won 2 NHFs in Ireland, a hurdle and 6 chases in the UK between 1986 & 1991. Provided Josh Gifford with his 1,000th winner when he won a valuable novice chase at Ascot in April 1988. Liked Ascot winning the SGB Chase in 1988 and was considered good enough to line up in that seasons Gold Cup although he was struggling when he came down three out. Didn't win thereafter but finished third in the Racing Post Chase his last start before Aintree. He was never a factor in the National but did complete the course. Sadly as he was being led back to the stables he collapsed and died.

BIGSUN (1981) b g Sunyboy - Stela Roma (Le Levanstell) - Won a hurdle & a 9 chases between 1986 & 1993. Was next to useless as a novice hurdler in 1985-86 but scraped one win over timber the following year. Took time to warm to fences as well but won three novice events in 1988-89 but unseated when fancied for the RSA at the Festival. Fared much better a year later when he smashed the course record by winning the National Hunt Handicap Chase beating future National hero Seagram. He showed a liking for his local track as he also took the four mile chase at the January meeting. In the 1990 National he was a never dangerous sixth and the following year when travelling well he blundered so badly at second Bechers that his race was effectively over. He did win once more at Sandown in 1992 but by the following year he was competing in points and hunter chases. Last saw action in a Towcester hunter chase in May 1993.

BLUE DART (1980) ch g Cantab - Maisie Owen (Master Owen) - Won 2 hurdles and 4 chases between 1984 & 1993. Won on chasing debut on what was his only start that season and then won three more times in 1987-88. Missed the following season and only managed one more win after that in a small race at Leicester in 1991. Was still in contention when he unseated at second Bechers in 1991 National. Finished tenth in the Scottish National in 1992 and also completed the course in that years Topham and in the 1993 Foxhunters on what was his final start under rules. Between 1994 & 1995 he ran in points winning once.

BUMBLES FOLLY (NZ) (1981) ch g Sea Anchor - Casurina (NZ) (Oakville) - Won a hurdle and 4 chases between 1985 & 1992. Only an average chase who managed about one win a season. Never hit the headlines and was so badly hampered at the seventh fence by a falling horse his National was effectively over although he struggled on for another circuit before being pulled up. Subsequently won a small race at Wincanton in February 1992. Ran in a point to point in February 1993.

CRAMMER (1980) b g Crash Course - Miss Hunter (Buckhound) - Won a hurdle & 4 chases between 1984 & 1991. Mum finished third in the 1970 National. Showed little over hurdles in Ireland but won on his debut for new connections over fences at Sandown in November 1986. Very lightly raced thereafter (he only ran a total of thirteen races over fences) but he did win at Ludlow in January 1989 after an absence of over a year and won two hunter chases at Nottingham. Finished a never dangerous second in the 1990 Liverpool Foxhunters and finished third in the Cheltenham equivalent a year later. Was prominent when he hit the Chair and came down in 1991 and only raced one more time finishing unplaced in the Scottish Grand National.

ENVOPAK TOKEN (1981) ch g Proverb - Luck Token (Festive) - Won 5 hurdles and 3 chases between 1984 & 1992. Showed nothing in 1984-85 for Jenny Pitman and missed the following season but showed good form for Josh Gifford winning five novice hurdles during his 1986-87 campaign. Was even better over fences winning at Lingfield and after a poor performance in the Reynoldstown Chase landed a 16-1 surprise in the RSA Chase at the Festival. After that he chased home the runaway winner Swarndean (one of those races where the winner got so far ahead in the early stages that the field just could not catch him) in the Mildmay Chase at Aintree. Not so good thereafter and on his sole National appearance he made mistakes and got behind so early on that he was pulled up before the fifth fence. Ran a much better race in the Scottish equivalent later that month although he was weakening when he ran out at the last fence. Very lightly raced thereafter and was last seen at Taunton in October 1993.

FOYLE FISHERMAN (1979) b g No Argument - Cute Peach (Hardicanute) - Won 2 NHF, 3 hurdles  & 7 chases between 1984 & 1992. Successful in bumpers in Ireland moved to the UK initially with John Jenkins and then to Josh Gifford. Took time to win over fences being placed in five of his first seven starts but then won at the eighth time of asking at Lingfield and followed that with a win in a valuable novice event at Ascot. Pulled off a shock when beating dual Queen Mother Chase winner Barnbrook Again at Chepstow in February 1988 but was out of his depth in the Gold Cup pulling up. His greatest success came when he won the 1991 Mildmay of Flete at the Festival beating future National runner up Romany King by two lengths. His next race was the National where he finished a never dangerous tenth on what was his only visit to Aintree. Lightly raced thereafter he did win twice more in the autumn of 1991 before falling in the King George at Kempton. Last seen pilling up in 1992 Welsh National. A fine servant to connections.

FRAZE (CZ) (1983) b m Lakmus (CZ) - Flabela (CZ)  (Belendek) (HUN) - Winner of 2 chases at Pardubice and 2 at Benesov in Czechoslovakia. Finished runner up in two Velka Pardubickas, in 1989 and 1990. Made the long trip to the UK as the second Czech runner for Vaclav Chaloupka in 1991. Without a prep race in the UK she was saddled with top weight and was tailed off when she pulled up at half way. Sadly she suffered a slight injury in running and did not race again

GENERAL CHANDOS (1981) ch g Glen Quaich - Kitta (Spartan General) - Won a hurdle and 7 chases between 1985 & 1991. Scottish trained who did all his winning at Scottish tracks, the highlight being when landing the Future Champion Novices Chase at Ayr on Scottish Grand National day 1987. He completed the course in the Topham twice in 1989 and 1990 and ran well for a circuit in the 1991 National for his forty something amateur rider before weakening on the second circuit and being pulled up. Sadly two starts later at Sedgefield he broke down badly and did not race again.

GOLDEN FREEZE (1982) b g Golden Love - Freezeaway (Vulgan) - Won NHF, 4 hurdles and 9 chases between 1987 & 1996. Initially trained in Ireland he won his debut bumper and enjoyed a very unusual first season over obstacles in 1987-88. Starting with a bumper he graduated straight to handicap hurdles (winning four) and ended his season with two wins in novice chases at Punchestown and Naas before finishing fourth in the Jameson Gold Cup, one of Irelands most prestigious novice chase events at the Fairyhouse Easter meeting. Sold privately thereafter he moved to the UK to be trained by Jenny Pitman and after winning three races by a total of fifty one lengths, this free spirited front runner was being touted as a possible Gold Cup horse. Despite being beaten by Barnbrook Again and Cavvies Clown in his next two starts he took his chance at Cheltenham but fell early in the race. He gained some consolation with a hard fought win over future Scottish Grand National winner Four Trix in a handicap chase over the Mildmay fences. The following season he started with a brave neck defeat in the Mackeson Gold Cup but he suffered a leg injury whilst being prepared for the King George VI Chase and his season was over. Off the course for fifteen months he was surprisingly entered in the Queen Mother Champion Chase where he finished tailed off and then went to the National where, despite his finishing position he ran a blinder. He led until the second Canal Turn and was still with the leaders until the petrol tank literally emptied and he ended up almost walking across the line last of the seventeen finishers. In 1991-92 he managed two small wins but it was his performance in the 1992 Cheltenham Gold Cup that raised eyebrows. Starting at odds of 150-1 he was the stables second string to the fancied Toby Tobias. Now I am not one for racing conspiracy theories as far as I am concerned all horses run to the best of their abilities (well in my world they do) but for me there was something not quite right about the way that he was harried into the first fence next to the red hot favourite Carvills Hill and then stalking him until the eighth fence when again he challenged the leader almost forcing him to make another mistake. I have never seen a horse ridden in such a way and there has to be something in the theories that he horse was run as a spoiler to the favourite. Despite winning a point at Tweseldown and a hunter chase at in 1995 at Ludlow he became very mulish in his old age. He refused at the Canal Turn when tailed of in the 1995 Foxhunters (he has fallen at Bechers in the inaugural running of the short lived John Parett Chase) and even once refused to race in a hurdle race. He last saw a racecourse at Taunton in March 1996.

HARLEY (1980) ch g Cranley - Harmony Rose (Drombeg) - Won a hurdle & 6 chases between 1984 & 1994. Only managed one win over timber in twenty five starts between 1985 & 1987 but took better to fences wining four times in his novice campaign. Was a dependable sort, never hit the headlines and ran mostly on the northern circuit. Never troubled the leaders but finished twelfth in his sole National start in 1991. Then went hunter chasing winning twice at Bangor in 1992. Returned to Aintree twice in the Foxhunters finishing in both 1992 & 1993. Ran in points until 1996 winning once.

JOINT SOVEREIGNTY (1980) b g Status Seeker - Sovereigns Choice (Sovereign Path) - Won a hurdle & 8 chases between 1985 & 1991. Useful novice chaser for Jimmy Fitzgerald in 1986-87 winning four of his six starts including the Dipper Novices Chase at Newcastle and finished fourth in that seasons Mildmay of Flete at the Festival. The next two seasons netted just two wins and he was sold into Philip Hobbs yard. In the autumn of 1989 he repaid new connections handsomely with victories in a valuable handicap at Newbury and then the Mackeson Gold Cup at Cheltenham where he came with a late run to beat Golden Freeze by two and a half lengths. He flopped in the December Gold Cup the following month and never showed the same form again. His two Nationals ended with his rider on the floor and he was last seen pulling up in a conditional jockeys hurdle at Cheltenham in November 1991.

LEAGAUNE (1982) br g - Over The River (FR) - Cora Princess (Laurensco)  - Won 2 chases between 1988 & 1995. Both his career wins came in novice chases at Towcester in 1989 and he was nothing more than a fairly mediocre long distance chaser. However, he put in probably his best performance in the 1991 National finishing a very credible ninth at odds of   200-1. Sadly he became the first fatality over Cheltenhams cross country course when he was killed at the Bank in the inaugural race in November 1995.

MASTER BOB (1980) b g Pitpan - Good Calx (IRE) (Khalkis) - Won 4 hurdles and 5 chases between 1985 & 1992. Useful sort won his four hurdles in his second season over timber and was shaping up into a useful chaser winning on his debut at Cheltenham and adding two other wins in his novice campaign. Then two seasons in the wilderness. On his debut run for his second season he blundered at the water at Newbury, finished tailed off and was off the track for more than a year. He raced just twice the following season. He returned though better than ever and sprang a 20-1 surprise victory in the 1990 Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Festival and beat future Grand National winner Seagram at Cheltenham (his third course win) later that year. After finishing third in the 1991 Kim Muir he lined up at Aintree, made mistakes and never got into the race pulling up on the second circuit. He was last seen out at Taunton in their four mile chase in January 1992 where he ran poorly and was retired.

MICK`S STAR (1980) br g Orange Bay - Starboard Belle (Right Tack) - Won 4 hurdles and 3 chases between 1983 & 1992. Won on the flat as a two year old. Useful hurdler but was very lightly raced over fences running just eighteen times in six seasons. Was quietly fancied for the 1989 National but injury ruled him out and when he did line up in 1990 he was prominent for a circuit before fading to finish amongst the back markers. Following that effort he was pulled up in the Scottish Grand National. He did manage five races during 1990-91 which also saw him pull up in the Welsh National. He was sold to Irish connections on the eve of the National where he became the only Irish challenger in the race (which I think is probably a record) and he finished but again he was a long way in rear. He raced just once more for his new connections at Gowran Park in January 1992.

MISTER CHRISTIAN (NZ) (1981) b g Captain Jason (NZ) - Grisette (NZ) (Arctic Explorer) - Won 2 hurdles and 6 chases between 1985 & 1994. Spent most of his career plying his trade in minor races and the 1991 National was the only race of note that he competed in. More often than not found one too good for him as he finished second no less than fourteen times between 1988 & 1990. Competed in point to points between 1994 and 1996 winning once at Tweseldown. Last seen under rules in a hunter chase at Towcester in March 1994

MR FRISK (1979) ch g Bivouac - Jenny Frisk (Sunacelli) - Winning point to pointer in his younger days he won 18 chases between 1986 & 1992. The 1990 hero who became the first sub nine minutes Grand National winner smashing the course record to win an a time of 8 minutes 47/8 seconds. It is a record unlikely to be broken as the race was run on firm ground which Aintree now avoids by watering the course. A successful point to pointer he did not race under rules until he was seven but had  a very successful novice campaign winning seven of his nine starts. The highlight being a demolition of future Gold Cup winner Charter Party at Nottingham in February 1987. He made most of the running (as was his style) in the RSA Chase at he Festival but he faded to finish fifth. He was at his best on good-firm/firm so was particularly effective in the autumn. In November 1988 he won his first of four consecutive Punch Bowl Amateur Riders Chases at Ascot. He won the 1989 Mildmay/Cazalet Chase at Sandown (a course he was particularly effective round) and was one of the favourites for the 1989 National but was withdrawn on the eve of the race on account of the very heavy going. He ran instead in the Whitbread Gold Cup but was pulled up in ground much heavier than he would have liked. After two wins on firm ground in the autumn of 1989 he was fancied for the 1989 Hennessy and finished a close up third. He finished fourth in the KIm Muir at the Festival and with the ground conditions in his favour at Aintree he started at very generous odds of 16-1. He was in the leading two for most of the race chasing the American challenger Uncle Merlin (the two made for a fine sight as they drew clear from the rest of the field) and he was left in front after the American landed too steeply and unseated his rider at second Bechers. He was not headed again although Durham Edition and perennial runner up Chris Grant did their level best to peg back the lead and Mr Frisk just held on to win by three quarters of a length. Three weeks later they beat Durham Edition again with a pillar to post victory in the Whitbread Gold Cup to become the first horse to win both races. If anything this was his finest hour. He returned to Aintree in 1991 but on ground that was not to his liking. He was not expected to win and was allowed to start at 25-1 and although prominent early on he was struggling by Bechers second time and he was pulled up. He won his fourth Punch Bowl a Ascot in 1991 and finished fourth again in the 1992 Kim Muir. Aintree was off the agenda this year and he last raced in the Whitbread where he finished seventh. He enjoyed his retirement as an eventer with his trainers wife. He injured a hind leg on the road in September 2000 and had to be put down.

OKLAOMA II (FR) (1980) b g Trenel - Koalla II (FR) (Vieux Chateau) - Won 3 chases between 1985 & 1993. French trained runner who was allowed to take his place in 1991 after a clerical oversight that saw him accidentally withdrawn at one of the forfeit stages. Whilst nothing more than an average chaser in France he ran three times in 1991 including a very good second behind the useful Panto Prince at Wincanton on his UK debut. Ran well for a circuit in the National itself before weakening and pulling up at the second Canal. Ran one more time in the UK when completely tailed off at Sandown the following year and a second attempt at the National was shelved. Last raced at Auteuil in November 1993.

RINUS (1981) br g Netherkelly - Pirello (Pirate King) - Won 4 hurdles & 12 chases between 1985 & 1992. Won three hurdle races at Carlisle and was also pretty effective at Ayr. Had an amazing novice chase campaign in 1988-89 where he ran no less than fourteen times, and as the season went on he graduated to handicap company winning no less than eight times culminating with a win in a handicap over the Mildmay fences at the Grand National meeting. He was never quite so prolific again but the following season he won two more times and ran unplaced in both the Welsh National and the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the  Festival. In 1990 he was fancied for the National on the back of his admittedly lucky (clear leader Willsford had fallen at the last fence) victory in the Greenalls Gold Cup but he still saw off a challenge from former Gold Cup winner The Thinker. At Aintree whilst he never could match the pace of runaway leaders Mr Frisk and Uncle Merlin he was fourth at half way and finished an albeit distant third. The following year he was going very well when he fell at the twentieth. He was being aimed for a third crack at the race when he broke down badly at Bangor in January and his career was over.

RUN AND SKIP (1978) b g Deep Run - Skiporetta (Even Money) - Won 2 hurdles & 14 chases between 1981 & 1992. To be frank by the time he lined up at Aintree this diminutive front runner was in the twilight of his career and he didn't get very far. He will be remembered as a very consistent chaser who won a very good quality Welsh National in 1985 (had a former (West Tip) and a future (Rhyme 'n' Reason) National winner toiling in his wake). He also won the Mildmay Memorial at Sandown on his next start and finished only four and a half lengths behind Dawn Run in fourth place in the 1986 Gold Cup. A tilt at the National was on the cards but instead he re-routed to the Irish Grand National where he ran prominently, disputing the lead, until the petrol tank emptied in very heavy conditions and he was pulled up two out. He was then off the course for nearly two years and he was not as good again although he was still campaigned in the highest company (pulled up in the Hennessy, unplaced in the Gold Cup and Whitbread during 1987-88). He missed 1989-90 and was being campaigned in hunter chases when he lined up in the National. As his Aintree experience was brief he next ran over four miles at Cheltenham's' Hunter Chase evening and beat a large field. It is a shame he did not go out in that blaze of glory - he ran once more the following January at Bangor and slipped up.

SOLIDASAROCK (1982) ch g Hardboy - Limefield Rita (Mon Capitaine) - Won a hurdle and 7 chases between 1987 & 1995. Won an Irish point in 1986. Fell on his debut over fences at Lingfield in 1987 and didn't show much in his first season over fences but then won both starts in the autumn of 1988 before leg trouble kept him off the course for a year. The highlight of his career was victory at long odds in the SGB Chase at Ascot (the predecessor of the Silver Cup) in 1989. He then ran big races in the Racing Post Chase finishing third and then finished sixth in the Mildmay Of Flete, his sole appearance at the Festival. He didn't show much in the National and a year later when tried in the Topham he appeared to slip on the approach to the Chair and came down. He did manage three wins in 1993 but thereafter showed little and more often than not pulled up. He was last seen at Wincanton in May 1995.

SOUTHERNAIR (1980) b g Derrylin - Port la Joie (Charlottown) - Won 7 hurdles and 5 chases between 1983 and 1992. Won on his debut over hurdles at Fontwell and was to have an incredible career at the Sussex track where he won nine times including the same handicap hurdle three years in a row. He was probably a better hurdler than chaser winning the New Years Day Hurdle at Windsor in 1985. Unseated both times he raced at Aintree although he was very unlucky in the 1990 Topham as he was leading when he was hampered by a loose horse two out and his rider was knocked from the saddle. In the 1991 National he was partnered by a Spanish amateur rider and they got no further than the seventh fence. He last raced under rules in January 1992 at Lingfield but did win a point to point at Tweseldown in 1994.

TEN OF SPADES (1980) b g Raise You Ten (Hansel Money (Prince Hansel) - Won NHF, 2 hurdles and four chases between 1984 & 1991. Fragile individual. Having shown promise in his novice hurdle campaign he missed the whole of 1985-86 and had his novice chasing season cut short after just three races (he won on his debut over fences at Ascot in 1986) due to a knee injury. When he did manage a full season in 1987-88 he finished third in the Cathcart at the Festival and won a valuable handicap at Cheltenhams April meeting. Then followed another season on the sidelines with leg trouble. He was the star of Fulke Walwyn's final season in 1989-90 wining twice at Ascot and running an absolute blinder in the Gold Cup. He led for much of the second circuit before fading and taking a nasty looking fall two out. He was past his best when he ran in the 1991 National and he never got into the race finishing amongst the backmarkers He pulled up in the Whitbread in what was his final start under rules. Bizarrely he re-surfaced at the age of sixteen in points on the south east circuit.

THE LANGHOLM DYER (1979) b g Crash Course - Belle Artiste (Artists Son) - Won hurdle and 5 chases between 1983 & 1991. When he did win he did so from the front. He won on his debut over fences at Ayr in October 1985. A win at Cheltenham at the Open meeting in 1986 was probably the highlight of a fairly low key career. He did twice finish he course in the Scottish National (1988 & 1991) and finished fourth in the 1991 Kim Muir at the Festival. He won a point on his last career start in May 1992

YAHOO (1981) b g Trombone - Coolnare Aga (Laurenco) - Won 2 hurdles & 8 chases between 1985 & 1992. Will forever be remembered for chasing home Desert Orchid in the mud of the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He gained some compensation over Dessie when he won the Martell Cup at Aintree a few weeks later when the Gold Cup hero spectacularly crashed out at half way. He was a game and genuine sort who it should be remembered ran in three Gold Cups (finished unplaced in both 1988 & 1990) and who won the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby and Greenalls Gold Cup in 1987-88. In the National itself he never got into the race and finished completely tailed off. The following year he showed nothing in four starts and after pulling up at Uttoxeter in April 1994 his career under rules was over. However that is not the end of the story as he continued to ran in point to points over the next three years and became one of the countries top pointers winning eleven times between the flags.

1992 - Party Politics

Party Politics.jpg

 The winner

Following two lacklustre performances in the autumn of 1992 Party Politics had a breathing operation and trainer Nick Gaselee, who had kept the horse after his sale to the Thompsons, believed the horse was at the peak of his form a year later having won the Greenalls Gold Cup at Haydock on his prep run. Certainly he seemed to have a real chance of winning a second National. Sadly it was not to be as 1993 was the void year and he was pulled up in the chaos at half way. He missed 1994 with a leg injury after winning his sole race at Chepstow. In 1995 after a year on the sidelines he twice chased home Master Oats but pulled up in his traditional prep run at Haydock. In the National partnered by Mark Dwyer (Llewellyn was claimed to ride Young Hustler) he bided his time on the first circuit, but turning for home he was looking to be the only danger to the long-time leader Royal Athlete. He tried his hardest but could not close the gap finishing a very honourable second beaten seven lengths. He had one more try in 1996 when he was kept to just one prep race at Haydock.  He was still fancied at 10-1 in a race that appeared to lack both quality and depth so it was a surprise that he got no further than the third fence where he took a nasty looking fall. He was retired immediately but often returned to Aintree on Grand National day for the "Parade of Champions".  He died in July 2009 aged twenty five.

Leading fancies

Garrison Savannah missed the season through injury and was never the same horse again. SEAGRAM had shown nothing in six starts and was friendless in the market at 33-1. Surprise first fence faller from 1991 DOCKLANDS EXPRESS started favourite with champion jockey Peter Scudamore now on board. Despite his failure last year he was by far and away the class horse of the race, he’d finished second in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby, second in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, fourth in the King George VI Chase and had only been beaten a length when third in a blanket finish in the Chetenham Gold Cup. He had also won a second Racing Post Chase as well. His conquerer at Cheltenham COOL GROUND had caused a 25-1 upset when landing the blue riband but he was a very useful handicap chaser having won twelve races over fences including an earlier Cheltenham Festival win in the Kim Muir Challenge Cup and the 1991 Welsh Grand National as well as winning the recognised National Trial the Greenalls Gold Cup at Haydock. BROWN WINDSOR started second favorite for the second time, a never dangerous fourth in 1990 he has missed last year through injury and had shown a return to form when winning at Sandown on his last start. Haydock specialist TWIN OAKS had won six times at the course but had been beaten by Cool Ground in the Greenalls Gold Cup. The giant PARTY POLITICS was making his Aintree debut and with a general election due in five days he would be a very topical choice. He had won five chases and whilst without a win this season had finished second in the Hennessy Gold Cup and was an albeit remote runner up to the brilliant but flawed Carvills Hill in the Welsh National. It was a strong line up.

The Class of 92

AUNTIE DOT (1981) b m Hallodri (AUT) - Drea Isle (Jupiter Isle) - Won 2 hurdles & 9 chases between 1985 & 1992. Ultra consistent mare who loved Uttoxeter winning six times at the Staffordshire track. She also ran in three successive Festivals in competitive handicap chases between 1990 & 1992. Had a very inauspicious start to her Aintree career finishing a never dangerous sixteenth in a huge field in the 1990 Topham. Prior to that ran twice in Ireland finishing third in the 1990 Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park. Ran the race of her life to finish third in the 1991 National being up with the pace throughout. Didn't run so well in what was her final start the following year weakening to finish a distant sixteenth of twenty two finishers. Was retired to the paddocks thereafter and gave birth to three foals. She died in 2001.

BONANZA BOY (1981) b g Sir Lark - Vulmid (Vulgan) - Won 5 hurdles and 10 chases between 1986 & 1994. Was originally going to be called Crow Point and after being hunted in his younger days he burst onto the scene in 1986-87 when trained by Philip Hobbs winning four of his first five hurdles including the valuable Persian War Novices Hurdle at Chepstow. Started joint favourite for the Ballymore Novices Hurdle at the Festival but could only finish ninth. The following season he won his first three chases but was re-routed to the Stayers Hurdle after some lacklustre efforts (he finished unplaced). The following season he was sent to Martin Pipe and won his first Welsh National beating Run and Skip and also won the Racing Post Chase at Kempton. Dropped out by Peter Scudamore in the early stages he quietly made up ground and just prevailed. In Scudamores record breaking season this was widely regarded as his finest riding performance. At his best  on soft/heavy ground he seemed an ideal old Cup type on the back of his Kempton win but he never got into the race finishing a tailed off fourth of five finishers on ground that really looked made for him. In the National itself he could't get nearer than eighth which when considering the ground conditions was again disappointing. The following season he was lightly raced but won a second Welsh National before finishing eighth in the Gold Cup and on fast ground that he hated was not surprisingly down the field in the National. His best performance in the National came in 1991 after he had won the first Midlands National to be run the weekend after the Festival. He finished sixth. Didn't show much thereafter, he unseated when behind in 1992 and in the void race he refused at Valentines second time when tailed off. He won a hunter chase in a large field for trainers son David at Ludlow in March 1994 and last raced at Exeter later that month.

BROWN WINDSOR (1982) b g Kinglet - Cauldron (Kabale) - Won 4 hurdles and 8 chases between 1986 & 1995. Won his three out of his first five hurdle events but was a better chaser. Won on his debut over fences at Newbury and also won at Nottingham before he finished third in the RSA. That in itself would have been a pretty satisfactory novice campaign but he ended his with a last gasp victory in the Whitbread Gold Cup, powering up the Sandown hill to snatch the race in the dying stages from the long time leader Sam Da Vinci. The following year he won the Cathcart at the Festival by a short head and on the back of that victory and his liking for fast ground he started favourite for the National. In the end he was placed but in reality he had been never dangerous behind Mr Frisk. He then suffered leg problems, was fired and was off the course for a year. He showed he retained ability by picking up a small race at Sandown and was again fancied for the National but this time he was unlucky. Up with the leaders early he collided mid-air with a rival at first Bechers and came down. That was pretty much the end of his career in the professional ranks. He was sent to be trained by Caroline Bailey and became a useful hunter chase/pointer winning two hunter chases and four time between the flags. He twice finished runner up in the Aintree Foxhunters in 1994 and 1995 and in what was his final appearance under rules was brought down in the 1996 renewal

CLONEY GRANGE (1979) br g Bargello - Pampas Wind (Copernicus) - Won 2 NHF, 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1984 & 1994. Won listed handicap chase at Punchestown in February 1990. Fairly useful in Ireland  but flopped on his rare visits to the UK (unplaced in both 1991 Festival and Welsh National later that year). Perhaps put up his best performance when finishing fourth at odds of 100-1 behind Desert Orchid in 1990 Irish Grand National (he pulled up in both the 1991 & 1992 renewals). Was still in contention when he fell at second Bechers in 1992. Later ran in a handful of points in the UK in 1993 & 1994 and was last seen in a hunter chase at Towcester in March 1994.

FOREST RANGER (1982) b g The Parson - Nora Grany (Menelek) - Won NHF race, hurdle and 4 chases between 1985 & 1995. His flat success came in Ireland and after a sole hurdles success in his novice campaign and four unsuccessful attempts over fences he was rather ambitiously entered in the RSA Chase at the Festival where he did to be fair complete the course at odds of 100-1. He did land a couple of novice events in the spring of 1989 but his last success came in a small event at Windsor in March 1991. His finest moment probably came when he finished fourth in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at the Festival in 1991 and he ran credibly in two Nationals finishing both times without troubling the leaders. He later ran in points winning twice in 1993 and was unlucky on his return to Aintree. His saddle sipped when challenging for the lead in the 1993 Foxhunters and he was unseated but he finished amongst the leaders when riderless.  He was still running in points at the age of fifteen.

GHOFAR (1983) ch g Nicholas Bail - Royale Final (Henry the Seventh) - Won 2 hurdles & 8 chases between 1986 & 1994. Sported distinctive blinkers and definitely had his own ideas about the game as in his later career he was prone to refuse (he twice refused at the last fence at Sandown). He was a useful novice chaser winning three times and finished fourth in the 1989 RSA Chase when fancied. That autumn he landed his biggest success when he beat Brown Windsor and Mr Frisk in a small field on unseasonably firm conditions in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. He later finished third in the Cathcart at the Festival before his first National attempt which did not go too well, hampered at the Chair he finished a never dangerous fourteenth. He fared better when he returned two years later finishing eleventh having been prominent for a long way. He flopped when tried over one circuit of the course n the 1993 Topham but enjoyed something of a renaissance in 1993-94 winning four of his twelve starts. He showed nothing in the autumn of 1994 and last ran under rules at Kempton on November 1994 but he ran without success in a few points in 1994.

GOLDEN FOX (1982) b g Tyrnavos - Red Spider (Red God (USA)) - Won a hurdle and 3 chases between 1987 & 1992. Won a novice chase at an Ascot evening meeting in May 1990 and was in fine form during the autumn of 1990 winning chases at Newbury and Exeter but was then off the course for fifteen months. Lined up at Aintree as a 200-1 outsider and ran like one. Tailed off pretty much from the start his rider persevered until the horse came to a tired stop at the twentieth fence. For whatever reason he ran jut one more time at Fontwell ten days later

GOLDEN MINSTREL (1979) ch g Tudor Music - Ethels Delight (Tiepolo) - Won a hurdle and 12 chases between 1983 & 1993. Wonderful servant to connections who ran eighty one times in a ten year career. A regular at the Cheltenham Festival he ran in the Kim Muir at the Festival an incredible five consecutive times winning in 1988 and finishing third twice (1987 & 1990) and runner up once (1991). He struggled in top company (unplaced in both 1987 Hennessy and 1988 Whitbread) and attempts at other Nationals failed (pulled up in Welsh National 1988 and Midlands National 1990). He did not run at Aintree until he was eleven finishing third in the 1990 Topham and he equipped himself very well to finish in both his Nationals. In 1992 he led over the first eight fences and was still contention five out before fading. A year later at the age of fourteen he maintained his 100% completion rate over the big fences when he finished seventh in the Foxhunters on what was his final start.

HONEYBEER MEAD (1982) b g Le Bavard (FR) - Midnight Oil (IRE) (Menelek) - Won a chase between 1986 & 1994. Useless over hurdles and only a very average chaser who only ever won once in his career (small race at Wincanton in January 1991) . The highlight of his career was finishing second at odds of 100-1 in the old four mile chase at Cheltenhams New Years Day meeting in 1992. Last seen at Wincanton in March 1994.

HUNTWORTH (1980) ch g Funny Man-Tamorina (Quayside) - Won 11 chases between 1989 & 1992. Very useful pointer in the west country winning eight times in 1988 & 1989. His handicap debut ended inauspiciously when he ran out when leading at Ascot in October 1989 but he did win three races under rules before his first assault on the National which ended when he unseated at the Chair. He hit a rich vein of form again in the autumn of 1990 winning four times including twice at Ascot. Ran in the next two Nationals but pulled up both times never getting into the race. Continued to pick up small races and last raced in October 1992.

KARAKTER REFERENCE (1982) br g Reformed Charater - Windtown Beauty (Lazer Light) - Won 9 chases between 1987 & 1993. Having shown nothing in two hurdles he was a revelation between the flags winning seven points in the north of England in 1988. Acted on good to firm/firm so was particularly effective in the summer/autumn months which is when he won eight of his nine chases. Back to back wins at Kempton in the autumn of 1991 and a hat-trick of victories during 1992 being the highlights. Was up with the leaders until fading on the approach to second Bechers in 1992 and he was eventually pulled up. He next ran in Belgiums premier steeplechase the Grand Steeplechase de Flanders but refused at one of the big hedges. Last seen under rules at Taunton in November 1993 but later returned to the pointing field but this time without success.

KITTINGER (1981) b g Crash Course - Mandaloch (Mandamus) - Won NHF, hurdle & 8 chases between 1985 & 1996. Won three times at Leicester. Fancied for the 1990 Topham on the back of a successful campaign that had seen him win a hurdle and three chases but he never got into the race and finished sixth in a big field. In the 1992 National he was tailed off when he was hampered by two loose hoses and he refused/unseated at the second Canal. He later won a chase at Taunton and although he did have some lengthy spells on the sidelines thereafter he stayed in training until the age of fifteen. Last seen at Folkestone in January 1996

NEW HALEN (1981) br g Dikuna - MIss Pear (Breakspeare II) - Won 10 races between 1985 & 1995. Showed nothing in NHF races in Ireland and fell on only start over hurdles. Very tough individual when he came to the UK where he was campaigned over fences. Didn't win in eleven starts in 1987-88 and the following year he again did not enter the winners enclosure although he was placed in thirteen of his sixteen starts. His best year came in 1989-90 where he won five times including a 66-1 surprise when lifting the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup at the Festival. In the 1990 Topham he led the field at Bechers and became the first horse to jump the modified fence. He was still going well when he unseated four out. A year later in the 1991 National he was still prominent and with a big piece of spruce hanging from his breast girth he unseated at the twenty third and in 1992 he shot his jockey over the nineteenth. In 1994 he finally completed the course over the National fences albeit in his own time when tailed off in the Topham. He last ran in Worcester in May 1995.

OLD APPLEJACK (1980) ch g Hot Brandy - Windfall (Master Owen) - Won 14 chases between 1986 & 1993. Started his career between the flags winning 3 points in 1986. Then raced under rules in hunter chases and was very lightly raced until he was nine. Then he changed hands and became a very useful handicap chaser. The highlight was probably beating future Melling Chase winner Blazing Walker at Wetherby in 1990 (after his first appearance at Aintree where he finished ninth in the 1990 Topham). He ran in two Nationals and equipped himself well both times finishing eighth and seventh respectively. Was particularly effective at Newcastle where he won eight times but it was at his favourite course that he met his end when pulling  up very lame in a chase there in March 1993.

OMERTA (1980) ch g Quayside - Cherry Princess (Prince Hansel) - Won 2NHF, hurdle & 6 chases between 1985 & 1992. Enjoyed an amazing and varied first season in 1985-86 running in bumpers, points, hurdles and chases winning the National Hunt Chase at the Festival and finishing a distant second in the Irish Grand National on very heavy ground. Was never so prolific again and thereafter he became somewhat difficult to train and was often on the sidelines. He did still manage victories in a couple of Irish points in 1989 before finishing fourth in the Cheltenham Foxhunters. Having been of the course for almost a year and now in the care of Martin Pipe in an incredible month in 1991 he won the Kim Muir at the Festival and the Irish Grand National which put a young Adrian Maguire firmly on the map. He then finished second in the Scottish National and he also ran in the Whitbread. Another lengthy spell on the sidelines followed and he ran in the 1992 National without a prep race. He was behind when he pulled up lame before the seventh fence and he was retired.

OVER THE ROAD (1981) ch g Over the River (FR) - Legal Fortune (Cash and Courage) - Won 5 chases between 1987 & 1991. Won three out of four points in Ireland in 1987 and unseated in the National Hunt Chase on his UK debut. A year later he landed the Festival marathon in a campaign that netted three wins and he also finished third in the Scottish National. Initially trained by Terry Casey he moved to John Upsons yard and won two more chases in 1991. He made his Aintree debut that year and put up an excellent display to finish fourth. He ended the season with a second third place in the Scottish National. No wins the following year but he again completed the course in he National. Sadly he suffered pelvic injuries on his next start when finishing runner up to Vanton in the Irish Grand National and he had to be destroyed.

RAWHIDE (1984) ch g Buckskin (FR) - Shuil Eile (Deep Run) - Won 3 hurdles and 4 chases between 1989 & 1994. Irish chaser who was a useful long distance hurdler in 1989-90 picking up three races including at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting. Flopped though when fancied for the Pertemps Final at the Festival later that year. Was arguably a better chaser picking up a second success at the Christmas meeting, a listed novices chase in 1990. Ran better at the Festival too finishing fourth in the RSA Chase. Ran well for a novice in that years Irish Grand National and was still prominent when he fell two from home. Started the following season well winning the Munster National at Limerick but then lost his way and unseated at the very first fence at Aintree (jumping the fence in last place). Showed nothing thereafter and being sent to the UK to be trained didn't do much for him either. Last seen at Chepstow in May 1994.

ROWLANDSONS JEWELS (1981) br g Avocat - Coolavene (David Jack) - Won NH flat race, 4 hurdles & 10 chases between 1986 & 1993. Won on his debut in a NH Flat race and also won on is debut over timber (won at Fontwell in September 1987 and then won three more on the bounce) and won on his debut over fences at Worcester in September 1988. Particularly effective at Sandown where he won three times. He ran credibly in numerous long distance chases most notably when third in the 1990 Welsh National and fourth in the 1992 Whitbread. At Aintree he blundered his rider out of the saddle at the Chair in 1992 after the horse had hit the fence and he completed a circuit in the shambles of the void race a year later. A month after that second Aintree adventure he broke down in a veterans chase at Warwick and was not seen out again.

ROYAL BATTERY (NZ) (1983) br g Norfolk Air - All At Sea (NZ) (Manthe Rail) - Won 4 chases between 1988 & 1993. Showed nothing over hurdles and didn't win until his nineteenth start but he did pick up two small novice chases in 1991. Put up his best performance when runner up in the National Hunt Chase at the 1990 Festival and completed the course in both a Welsh and Midlands National. Outclassed and outpaced in the National itself he was pulled up and was lightly raced thereafter. He was last seen pulling up at Exeter in December 1993

RUBIKA (FR) (1983) ch g Saumon (FR) - Eureka III (FR) (Vieux Chateau) - Won 7 chases between 1988 & 1992. Took a while to lose his maiden tag winning at the fourteenth attempt at Wolverhampton in February 1990 and then like London buses there were two more victories, He never got competitive in the Topham finishing fifteenth. His most famous moment came in a bizarre incident in a novice hurdle at Leicester in January 1991 - a typical "What Happened Next" moment - in a clear lead and with the race at his mercy he inexplicably stumbled yards from the winning line and fell in a heap (it is featured on the 1990-91 Race Vision Review of the Year). He showed some pretty good form thereafter finishing runner up in the Midlands National and he won the Cheltenham Four Mile Chase on New Years Day in 1992. He completed the course in the National but was a never dangerous fourteenth and later finished unplaced for the second year running in the Scottish Grand National. That was it under rules but he surprisingly reappeared four years later in points winning one race between the flags at the age of fourteen. INTERESTING FACT - Rubika was Trevor Hemmings' first National runner

SEAGRAM (NZ) (1980) ch g Balek - LLanah (Baly Royal) - Won 4 hurdles & 12 chases between 1983 & 1996. The 1991 National hero remembered for breaking the heart of yet another Pitman as he overhauled Garrison Savannah and Mark Pitman in the dying strides of the 1991 National. Just like his dad on Crisp. He had been a useful hurdler winning an amateur riders event on Grand National day in 1986. He was a better chaser notching up wins in handicaps but he was found wanting when tried in top company judging by his unplaced efforts in the 1989 & 1990 Whitbread Gold Cups and 1990 Hennessy. He did run Bigsun to a head in the 1990 National Hunt Handicap Chase, a race which he won a year later and was also successful beating Bonanza Boy in the Chetenham four mile chase on New Years Day 1991. Despite his size he seemed an ideal National sort and apart from a blunder at he twelfth fence he jumped soundly and was challenging Garrison Savannah three out but between the last two fences the Gold Cup winner looked to have seen him off and he was some way adrift in second place at the last fence. Garrison Savannah weakened at the Elbow and Seagram got his second wind and stole the race n the last one hundred yards. His ecstatic rider (who few had heard of) in his first National ride stood up in the stirrups saluting the crowd before the winning post. A worthy winner on the day he finished fourth in the Whitbread Gold Cup on his next start. Thereafter his form completely deserted him and he never won another race. He ran moderately over the next two seasons which yielded two unsuccessful returns to Aintree.  He was never a factor in the 1992 National and was pulled up in the closing stages and he sulked in rear in the inaugural Becher Chase, jumping poorly until he deposited his rider at the Chair. He pulled up at Sandown in January 1993 and was then off the course for nearly two years before reappearing in the autumn of 1994 aged fourteen. Now trained by Josh Gifford he ran three times without getting competitive and was retired. He died in 1997 aged seventeen.

SIRRAH JAY (1980) b g Tug of War - Dellasville (Trouville) - Won hurdle and 16 chases between 1986 & 1995. Didn't run under rules until he was six but he more than made up for it as he was an incredibly tough individual who ran consistently without injury over the next nine years. Won four times in Ireland before moving to the UK for the 1988-89 season. Fourteen runs yielded two wins. He ran mostly in small events in the south making his first trip to Aintree in 1992. He finished unplaced in the Topham before being turned out again two days later for the big one. He never got into the race and finished tailed off last of twenty two finishers. It was a successful season though, fifteen races and four wins (would have been six but he lost two on technicalities). 1992-93 was even busier, sixteen races and three wins and what a difference a year made. On his return to Aintree he sprung a surprise to win the Topham catching long time leader Southern Minstrel close home to prevail by a neck. 1993-94, fourteen runs, no wins but he was becoming something of an Aintree specialist finishing fourth in the Becher Chase and third in the Topham. He last graced the Aintree turf in 1995 finishing ninth in the Topham on his penultimate start. He last ran at Uttoxeter later that month. A wonderful servant for connections

STEARSBY (1979) br g Politico (USA) - Lucky Sprite (Galivanter) - Won a hurdle and 7 chases between 1982 & 1992. Took time to warm up over fences and ran in novice company for two seasons including twice in the RSA Chase. Won four times in his second novice season including the Mildmay Chase at Aintree in 1986. His purple patch came in December/January 1986-87 when he won the Welsh National and the Mildmay Memorial at Sandown and was for a short time second favourite behind his stable companion Burrough Hill Lad for the Gold Cup. In the event he was a last minute withdrawal through injury and he was never as good again. In fact an indication of how far his star had fallen was that when he did line up in the Gold Cup of 1988 he started at odds of 100-1 (he fell when out of contention). He did manage a win in a small race at Nottingham in 1989 and he held each way claims for the 1989 National and he was disputing the lead when he refused at the eleventh fence depositing his jockey over the other side of the fence. He went hunter chasing later in his career winning at Leicester and put up a fine performance to finish fourth in the 1991 Foxhunters, He then reverted to handicaps and pulled up on both his starts before the 1992 National where he started at 250-1. He was in rear when his rider survived a monumental blunder at Bechers and he was last and tailing off when he refused at Valentines. It was to be his final start.

TEAM CHALLENGE (1982) ch g Laurence O - Maid O' the Wood (Prince Hansel) - Won hurdle and 9 chases between 1986 & 1993. Won a hunter chase at the Punchestown Festival on only his third start under rules before moving to the UK. Won four times at Plumpton and finished third in a Midlands National in 1988. Became something of an Aintree stalwart running over the National fences five years in succession. Ran a blinder on his first visit in 1989 and was with the leaders until fading two out to finish a very credible eighth. Was outpaced on the fast ground in 1990 but in 1991 along with his stable companion Golden Freeze blazed the trail for a circuit before ploughing through the big ditch and throwing his unfortunate jockey over the fence. Opting for the slightly calmer waters of one circuit he finished ninth in the 1993 Topham and pulled up in the 1994 Foxhunters in what was his final start.

TWIN OAKS (1980) br g Raise you Ten - En Clair (Tarqogan) - Won hurdle and 12 chases (eight at Haydock) between 1985 & 1993). Looked to have a promising future over fences winning three times at Kempton (including the Feltham Novices Chase which to be fair was not the race it is today) in the autumn of 1987 for David Murray-Smith.Then it all started to go wrong. Forced to miss his intended Festival target in 1988 due to a setback he missed the 1988-89 season and was limited to just two lacklustre starts in 1989-90. Then he changed trainers and the move to Gordon Richards clearly did him the world of good as during 1990-91 he rattled off five victories in a row, four of which were at Haydock including the Greenalls Gold Cup. Promoted to 12-1 clear favourite for the National a decision was made to go for the Gold Cup first which turned out to be a mistake. He returned stiff from his Cheltenham exertions and the Aintree plan was shelved. The following season and two more wins at Haydock (including the Peter Marsh Chase) and finally he made it to Aintree. After a problem with his saddle (stitching in the girth gave way meaning that rider Neal Doughty had to weigh out twice) he never really could land a blow in the big one and although he did make some progress in the closing stages which suggested he may sneak a place he eventually faded to finish fifth.  In 1992-93 there were two more victories at Haydock but retirement beckoned after he pulled up lame in the Greenalls Gold Cup.

WHAT`S THE CRACK (1983) - Won 2 chases between 1990 & 1995. Won an Irish point to point in 1989 and won on his debut over fences at Worcester in October 1990. Then ran up a sequence of four second places before finishing a close third in the RSA Chase at the Festival. In 1991-92 he ran consistently well in big handicaps, fourth in the Hennessy, pulled up in the Welsh National and fifth in the National Hunt Handicap Chase before his run at Aintree. Didn't show much thereafter running for the final time under rules at Stratford in June 1995. Later ran without success in point to points.

WHY SO HASTY (1981) b g Proverb - Well Caught (Golden Vision) - Won 3 chases between 1987 & 1993. All his wins came when trained in Ireland in 1987. By 1992 he was with Lincolnshire trainer Martin Chapman and was only very average pulling up four times (including in the Midlands National) in the run up to his sole run at Aintree where he again pulled up. Showed little thereafter last running at Nottingham in February 1993.

WILLSFORD (1983) b g Beau Charmeur (FR) - Wush Again (Three Wishes) - Won 4 hurdles & 12 chases between 1987 & 1995. An old favourite. Won his two novice hurdles in 1988 both in big fields at Lingfield and Windsor and finished sixth in the Mersey Novices Hurdle at that years National meeting. Went chasing the following season but after winning two novice events he reverted to hurdles and ran away with the 1989 County Hurdle at the Festival. Back to chasing he developed into a very smart performer the following season lifting the last Midlands National to be run at the end of April. Earlier he had been very unlucky when he fell at the last in the Greenalls God Cup at Haydock having gone into what looked like an unassailable lead. He missed the 1990-91 season and on his return went through his only winless campaign (although he did finish third in the Midlands National) which included his sole run in the National. He was prominent early and led from the Canal Turn to the twentieth fence before dropping back to finish amongst the backmarkers. He continued to be a stalwart in long distance chases although he never returned to Aintree. He ran in a total of four Scottish Nationals wining his third one in 1995 which was his finest season that also saw him take the Warwick National and the Eider Chase at Newcastle. He was a regular in the Midlands National and finished fourth in his sole Welsh National in 1993. Sadly he was denied the long retirement he so richly deserved as he collapsed and died during a small race at Cheltenham in November 1995 in what was billed as his final race.
